    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

I think that might be acceptable....my front axle has the exact same play you are describing, whereas the rear axles do not - but I think that is because of the axles being linked together. -Will

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

All thanks to you guys on Steel Soldiers! Haha! Good call....I'm glad it turned out to be a simple fix. I certainly don't need to create any more work for myself on this truck :D

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Yeah my front pinion needs new bearings, too. Definitely check those jackshaft bolts....and like was stated before, it is much easier to do from the cab after removing the panels than from the ground! -Will

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Hopefully it holds out....are they ever really fixed? Haha

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Awesome! I like that conclusion haha in the mean time I will keep chipping away at the rest of the work on the truck.... Thanks for all of the help! I'll keep you guys updated if there are any catastrophic events that occur... -Will

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Haha! I just got back from the drive. I couldn't feel/hear any noise more than usual M35a2 noises. It is tough to diagnose these trucks because of the immense volume. I did top off the transfer case, but it was only a little low (by like an inch per finger measurement) About a quart to top...

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

I started the engine and put the trans in gear and transfer in neutral, everything was silent. I'm going to take it for a short drive and report back.

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Update - I checked all fluids and bolt torques. The fluids were all ok except the transfer case was about 1 quart low. The driveshaft bolts were all ok. The jackshaft bolts tightened up a *little* bit (but were not "loose" by any stretch). All u joints feel tight (no slop) and the pinion...

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Checking fluids today. The transmission shifts *nice* and feels smooth turning the output shaft in neutral/neutral. I am checking torque on all bolts today. Will post back with results.

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

10-4 on that. I will change it, but the question is where is this new vibration/gear sound coming from if that play was already in existent before the trip? Feel it in the seat/body and the sound is a gear noise or bearing noise. More gear sounding though.

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

I tend to agree, but it wouldn't be the first time I have seen a bearing with slight play give good service life.... The pinion bearing failure is very strange - the bearings I replaced in the front/rear axle "looked" fine but were certainly loose. They were also smooth. So I think for these...

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Good fluids and grease were used. Less than 1000 miles ago everything was changed (even the steering box oil!) Is there any other way to check for bad pinion bearings than lateral play? When I changed the front rear axle pinion bearings, it had noticeable (1/8 inch) play. The rear rear axle...

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Then by that metric, the joints are tight. They also do not get even remotely warm after a long drive, I am assuming it would be very hot if failing.

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

I replaced the front rear axle pinion bearings. They were noticeably loose - all of the rest *seem* tight. Is there any other way to check? Lubed them all less than 1000 miles ago. Will lube again. I'll throw a torque wrench on them this weekend....
  15. Corvette1974

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

I am definitely going to check all of the driveline bolts. How did you check for notchiness in the u joints? Mine all feel tight/don't get hot but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I do know that I had a loos Rockwell input shaft bearing set and changed those, that took out a lot of the...

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Haha probably a good call. The less I am on the ground the better! I'll let you know what I find out.

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

You do? I am familiar with the shaft (I just was turning it to feel the bearings)... The bolts are 100% accessible from the underside, unless I am losing my mind haha -Will
  18. Corvette1974

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

None of them were noticeably loose, but I will throw a wrench on them and see if they are loose. The middle driveshaft and rear driveshaft have all new bolts that only have about 300 miles on them. -Will

Sorry for the weird formatting, I copy and pasted from word! -Will

    Vibration/Noise - Bad Transfer Case?

Hello, I just took my deuce to the NYC Veterans Day parade, and had an amazing time! It made the journey no problem, but on the way home, it started to make some sounds/have a vibration. The drive was about 65 miles each way, so everything was well up to temperature. The truck has a high...
