Get a good battery charger designed for AGM and top the batteries off once a month or so. That's about all that can be done without a complete redesign.

Once you do so much as show one of these a picture of sand, you'll keep finding it coming out of nooks and crannies you didn't know existed for the rest of it's life. Clean what you can, and just accept the fact that you'll find more later.
For parts of the fuel system you can blow out afterwards with compressed air, I buy denatured alcohol by the gallon from the hardware store.
If it isn't something you can blow/dry out afterwards, then diesel or kero will be fine.
Kerosene and diesel are pretty close; Kero is just much more highly refined.
There shouldn't be any issues if mixed with regular diesel, but running it straight might not provide enough for the injection pump leading to premature failure.
