Hose the spindle nut area on top where the keyway is with brake cleaner and you should be able to see the key inside. That should let you figure out how to remove it (it is only held in there with friction).

According to the TM (I originally thought that was a piece of locking hub, but stand corrected....) This is the style nut used on the early 1984 CUCVs before VINs ending with F136196.
To remove it according to the -20TM (Page 439 in the PDF) you insert a #4-40 screw into the end of the key...
