    I just bought an M38A1

Well, the guy that rebuilt mine, swears it was all good. The steering linkage is visibly shot, and I had to get new tie rod ends, a new pitman arm, a new steering box, a new steering wheel, working gauges, new shocks, new tires (the old ones were dry rotted), and in an effort to further clear...

    I just bought an M38A1

You guys have convinced me, I am sticking with a T90. Mine might need a rebuild, or maybe I just need to practice double clutching more! I'll be getting an overdrive from Herm too. So, that means the only change I am making to the M38A1 is new brakes up front. The truck has no vacuum assist...

    I just bought an M38A1

The T90 is not synchronized between 1st and 2nd gear. The T18 has a granny low 1st, so you start in 2nd. Are you saying it would lower the values of the Jeep because it isn't original? It is authentic to the era, it came out in 1955, and the Military used it in some trucks.

    I just bought an M38A1

I found someone selling original, unused M38A1 steering boxes! I'm trying to keep my Jeep as true to the original as possible. The only serious changes from the original I have now is putting in a T18 tranny, and front disc brakes. The T18 is a much better tranny, all the main gears are...

    I just bought an M38A1

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to fly up and down the highway. I'll mostly do 30-40. I just want to go 55 on the highway without overworking the engine when I go out of town to things like camping sites. At 20MPH, I have to stomp down hard on the brakes. I won't add a vacuum assist, or bigger...

    I just bought an M38A1

I can add disc brakes without any drilling or cutting. The current drums have no stopping power, and even if I go up from 9 to 11, I still doubt it will be nearly as much as the disk brakes. The tranny is worn out. I could either put in another T90, or upgrade to a T18. The T18 being virtually...

    I just bought an M38A1

Installed seat belts. Ordered spacers so I can do a front disc brake conversion. I am replacing the T90 with a T18 transmission, will I still need an overdrive? Do I need just the Gamma Goat lenses? And to wire my right side tail light so it comes on with my left side one? And finally, the big...

    I just bought an M38A1

The advice came from the guy who built up the Jeep. He says, with the 4 cylinder, it doesn't add much, is expensive, and essentially a waste. He also says he can ride it comfortably at 50 MPH.

    I just bought an M38A1

It has warn locking hubs, so I'm all good there. I was told "don't fall for that overdrive bs. You gain almost nothing because the engine is so small". Aside from the seat belts, my new question concerns the oil I use for differentials and engine. In my newer trucks, I've always used synthetics...

    I just bought an M38A1

No answers on the hub question? And can I install seat belts without drilling holes into my Jeep?

    I just bought an M38A1

I mis-posted. What I actually meant to say, was that I was thinking of installing a PTO winch that was not the Original model. If I do that, what do I need to look out for? And, are the present hubs on the M38a1 kind of like the manual FJ Cruiser? It's AWD, so the front differential is in action...

    I just bought an M38A1

Oh, and one more question. I want to install seat belts. What length do I need?

    I just bought an M38A1

I want to get some good rubber floor mats for my M38a1, does anyone know what fits? Maybe CJ5 mats? Also, if I install a PTO winch, but the extremely expensive Original 50s Ramsey one, does anyone know the limitations? And why the recommendation that I install locking hubs? Every CJ I've had...

    I just bought an M38A1

Overdrive sounds great-I just did some research, and even though I have rebuilt two jeeps (both 70's CJs) I had never heard of it! I really only want to go fast for brief stretches on the major highways, so I don't get pulled on an interstate for going too slow, and it doesn't take me forever to...

    I just bought an M38A1

Fully restored, all original equipment. I won't go hardcore four wheeling, or on long trips with this, but I would like to go camping and head out to the local parks with it. Is there anything I can do to give it a top speed of like 65? Instead of about 50? Regear? Bigger tires (not something...
