So much good info in this thread. Extremely happy you stuck it out and got it licked. Many will benefit from all your work. Sounds great now. NICE JOB! [thumbzup]
Maybe or maybe not. During cranking the RPM of the engine is so low that the valves will open relatively slowly. You may not get a pop.
If you really want to nail it in you put a dial indicator on the valves and a degree wheel on the crank. Just like we do when verifying valve timing on race...
Could be as simple as a valve adjustment being just a hair tight. I can hear the sound too.
When I first put an engine together I tend to run a few extra thousandths extra clearance on the valves for the initial run-in. After everything has taken a basic set I'll bring them in to spec.
If...
That is what I'm talking about. You need (as it shows in the diagram) to measure at the top and bottom of travel. Don't measure outside the area where the rings move in the cylinder. I personally do top, middle, and bottom. That also confirms the taper in the cylinder. Make sure the minimum gap...
Something that can happen is if your oil pressure goes really high it can cause the lifters to pump up. Since the clearances are tight in these engines it could cause a valve interference issue.
After you worked on the oil pressure relief spring did you see the oil pressure spike when you...
Wow. That would be a first but lets hope not. You'll be replacing a cam if they did that. I can't imagine that wouldn't stand out since the rocker arm will be jacked up a lot higher than the rest.
If I were to bet on when.. I bet it was an error upon assembly. The scenario would be that the valves were tightened down and the unit started without giving the minimum wait time for the lifters to bleed down.
OR.. You have a bad lifter.
That is a bit overkill to have it go 24/7. For the big diesel generators we have a service come in and polish the tanks every 2 years. Unless there is a real outage the tanks are not turned over but about half a volume per year during monthly maintenance runs.
I suspect if you ran the...
