Ok, the first installment on "How I swapped an AO42 Generator Set engine for my Mule engine."
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?119315-Generator-Set-(AO42-Military-Standard-Engine)-swap-to-Mule&p=1494567#post1494567
I started getting my thoughts together on the conversion topic. I am going with some "lessons learned", "tools needed", "steps involved", and "locally available parts" types of information. There are about 25 photos. I have a total of 147 photos, so I am sure I will have photos of any...
I have a ton of photos and would be happy to do a conversion thread. Anybody else interested? Not sure how long it would take me to put one together - and I need to figure out something on the photo upload thing.
Drove the Mule the four blocks back to the Armory at 3:00 this afternoon. It was...
Well, after 3 months and over 1,200 views, I think we can put this puppy to bed.
My Mule engine is NOT broke - at least any longer.
All it took was a new generator set engine, some extra parts, a little bit of "wrenching", and much learning. Some of it was easy. None of it was hard. None of...
I will pull the pan tomorrow and post photos of anything extraordinary.
It is a little difficult posting photos here, so I am not posting a bunch.
Here is what I have discovered so far.
The end of the camshaft is broke and the timing gear was bouncing around under the cover. This chewed up...
I am not sure if I even have "engine parts" let alone a "parts engine". :(
I did not upload photos of the magneto. It looks even worse. I still have to remove the oil pan, but I believe I have determined why the thing stopped running. I just don't know which part stopped first - not that it...
Started the conversion from a generator engine Monday, but it has been one of those kinds of weeks.
I have the new engine stripped (mostly) and the original engine removed from the Mule. Started the disassembly of it this morning and made decent progress considering the number of "visitors" in...
Thanks for the heads up. Contacted them to try and get a copy.
Isn't it cool? We talk to each other on two different forums?
Hopefully, more of the "cast a wider net" thing.
I am with you all the way until the father/son project. It is just me, myself, and I. Personally, I think with the three of us, there will be much second guessing and discussion, but we will try and get through it.
I hear you on the "keep the parts" thing. Believe it or not, I even kept the...
I am leaning toward a gen-set engine swap. I agree with emmado22, in that a new donor engine should be a better solution all the way around: quicker, less expensive, worry free, easier, new, etc.
I have a couple of "feelers" out trying to locate engines. Just a few possibilities, but I am...
Some that frequent another forum may notice this is pretty much a duplicate of another thread I have going "over there". I recognize some of the some folks here and there, but I suspect some are unaware of the other forum. Just trying to throw a larger net. Hope that is OK.
Anyway back on...
The latest and greatest on my mule engine.
Checked for spark before installing new plugs. Engine turns over fine without plugs installed. Gap new plugs to .030 and install to 275 - 300 inch pounds; more or less.
Choke engine, as it is cold here. Engine fires right off. After perhaps 5...
I assume "one hundred" means 100 octane?
Is "low lead" a little better than unleaded?
If I use 90+ octane (non-ethanol), how much Dextron (transmission fluid?) should I use per gallon?
Been there - done that. Oil smells like oil.
I use ethanol in my vehicles, but they aren't 45 years old. I buy the gas at the airport because they have leaded fuel. I guess I did not ask, but I believe it is not ethanol. At least the pump does not say "ethanol".
I purchased it from the...
Started at the spark plugs. After reading on another forum, I thought I might have difficulty removing the plug wire from the plug and I was preparing to build a "special" wrench. No problem getting the wire off the plug. Did a little research to find the plugs are to be tightened at 275 -...
Sorry about the long topic. I think my Mule engine is broke and I don’t know where to start.
Some background information:
It is a 1968 A5 that has been converted to electric start with no charging system. There are no other modifications.
I replaced the hour meter and muffler. When I purchased...
