Suggestion. Run the cable under the fender. That's what we did, and you don't trip over the wire in the dark. We mounted a few cheap cable loops on the under side to keep the wire up, and not snag or hang down.

Why buy battery hold downs? What you have works and dosn't look bad. Maybe shorten up the J-bolts a bit, but other then that, it's good to good! That's money saved for important things like beer! Gas for the bike!

As far as I can remember, there are at least 3-4 different manufacturers for the switch. But I cant say for certain that anything got improved, other then the float material itself. And that's only the covering, for the floats.

Is the float adjusted too low? Therefore vibrations every once in a while cause the float assy. To shake around too much?
