Yes sir! I would have guessed winch sheer pin. Having had to replace a few over the years on active. That was my first thought. Three weeks ago, I had to unwind a rats nest like that, But it was a Hyd. winch, and had not sat more then two years. Took 4-4.5 hours, and I wanted to bring the torch...
I drove some of the last 5 ton gassers, in 32nd AADCOM in 1973, to the bone yard. We had to tow a few. They were a super PITA to steer without the truck running, or rolling. I would try and start it. Might be a lot of work, but might save you tearing up your shoulders!
Something like this happened to us in the field one day. We were in the woods outside of K-Town, and had the CG, the Brigade Commander, Battalion Commander and a million strap hangers watching us take up position. Someone put the porta potty's on pallets and dropped them too close to the mess...
