Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

Ok this may be a dumb question but here goes: I've got everything back together and all I need to do is bleed the brakes...BUT When you turn the passenger hub forward, the driver side one turns backward and vice-versa. Have I done something horribly wrong? Edit: OK me and Soldier B turned...

Did this yesterday; backing out the broken bolt was so easy, at first I thought the extractor was just spinning and not catching. But it came right out. Had me scratching my head what caused it to break in the first place (I did hit it with PB Blaster but still...it came right out with no...

Dave, Thanks for the parts source...I had ordered from Ted's Trucks before and already fired off an e-mail to them about getting a replacement sent. Yes I have the bushings and the plates out, since I had the steering knuckles entirely off. Thanks again!

Sorry to post so many questions in this thread but seems like the place for them. Do the kingpin bushings need any RTV / permatex sealant? Banshee did not mention any and there is no mention of this in my -20 TM. (because, really, there is no word on removing / replacing them that I can find...)

Another setback today: local hardware had no 1-3/4" SS screws so I got 1-1/2". Inner clamps went on fine but in attempting to get the outer one on, with channel locks squeezing it, it broke. So now I need to wait on another clamp to get here and probably not going to make it for the parade on...

When it comes to installing the boots themselves, on pg 5 of this very thread Houdel says: However, in another thread, Heavysteven experiences torn boots (newly installed) because he did not bend the bolts. Who is right in this matter? And if you do bend the bolt, do you bent it to match the...

OK the slide hammer took the seal retainers out easily, but then I found I did not have an item the right size to press the seals out of the retainers (I have an arbor press). But the neighbor's air hammer made quick work of them. One of the seals looks like it was red loctited in place. Is...

Wow, got the steering arm off today. Just lots of turning, twisting, pulling and beating with the BFH. Tomorrow--the axle seals!

Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

OK I will try further beating on the steering arm to get it loose. Another question: on Pg 3 Banshee talks about removing the axle seals. I'll attach his picture. Obviously a big piece is missing but the seals I have are relatively small. Banshee talks about a "retainer." Are the seal and...

Thanks Dave! Yeah, those are in place on my axles. The TM drawing made it look like they would fall off separately! Any ideas on removing the steering arm from the steering knuckle? I just searched the -20 TM again and can't find any info on this. OH, and p.s. I was able to borrow a slide...

Oh, one more follow-up: I have both axles out but never found these thrust washers. Are they likely to have fallen off inside the axle housing or are they attached to the axle shaft? #12 and #13 in this pic. Looks to me like there are possibly thrust washers on the outside and inside edges of...

Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

I've made really good progress today. The passenger side is all apart except the seal(s) inside the axle housing. The driver's side is where I'm hung up: what's the trick to getting the steering arm to let go of the steering knuckle? I've got the bolts off and have given it some significant love...

Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

I've made some good progress today getting the brake shoe assemblies and backing plates off, and just removed the tie rod. BUT in so doing I damaged the threads on one of the tie rod nuts. Anyone have these in stock or should I look again at McMaster-Carr or something? Nevermind the tie-rod nut...

DB, you've given me something to look up. Don't know what an extractor is but clearly I didn't invent this problem! Thanks.

Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

Day 3: began to remove the first axle flange, and on the 3rd bolt I broke my ratchet. Edit: Day 3 continued. I switched over to using a box-end wrench inside a 3' steel pipe and removed the remaining bolts, BUT one of them sheared off deep in the hub. I suppose I need a new hub now? I could try...

Hey, it's humid. Maybe this weekend I'll get a lot done. The Marine Corps League wants her in a parade on 9/15, that's my motivation!

Day 1: broke loose all the lug nuts. Day 2: set her up on jack stands and removed the front wheels. Yep, I set a blistering pace!

Get done everything from pg 1 of this thread in 3 hours? My first time? I am not seeing that happening...I am not the fastest with these things, though.
