Don't make it harder than it has to be man. Remember that it is YOU doing the work. I myself hate when I get a grand idea and then figure out just how much work I didn't have to do when I'm well into a task.
Dan, pull the water pump and check the fins on the impeller, they may be badly eroded. I would also flush through the water pump housing while it is off. Sounds like you re-deposited some gunk and clogged some cooling passages when you did the flush. Could be in the block, could be in the...

I've been replacing every rusty body related fastener that I remove with a stainless counterpart. No reason to replace rusty bolts with bolts that are just going to rust up again. I've even replaced my door moulding screws and nuts with stainless, and working on replacing all my hardtop bolts now.
