    I found a gun cleaning product called Pro Shot Copper Solvent IV takes the gunk off diesel pistons faster than scraping, especially in ring grooves. It is water based, a few Q-tips full cleans the ring grooves fast. It also works on gasoline engine pistons.

    Laminated steel graphite? Most modern head gaskets are multi layer metal, not needed here as it is iron block and head. Multilayer metal are typically used on aluminum heads with iron block. thickness is most critical, you could probably make a gasket from high temperature composite sheet...

    I've only used the 3-stone type. Yes, they work well to remove top cylinder ridges too. I use coarse stones, wrapping a single layer of tape around the bottom of the stones so only the top of the stone contacts the ridge. You can see when the ridge is removed. Far easier than a dedicated ridge...

    Aren't top rings chromium or other corrosion resistant alloy? Yes, I would be more concerned with rust in the ring inserts on the pistons causing stuck rings. You should be able to clean them out on complete tear down.
