LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

We will see. It's a fun hobby at the very least and It'll be good info for everyone if it does work. Beats driving an Ev

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

I'm going to give a stab at the deco Remy 28SI unit first. $170 with 1yr warranty. 24v 110A with remote sense. Bolt pattern from literature matches the inner set of holes on the pad mount. As you said, Those bigger units don't fit in that space so probably why they went to tabbed style...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

I found this one fairly affordable but not 100% on the bolt holes. It would need to be spaced away from the block anyway to clear the intake. https://www.rareelectrical.com/i-26880430-new-alternator-compatible-with-caterpillar-engine-c7-c9-c11-c15-c27-c32-272-1889-3524032-20r0053.html then...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

You probably answered this many times, but is there any benefit to going with the pad mounted alternator? After taking off the neihoff bracket, it seems like I'm looking at a cat engine that's meant to take a cat alternator.

That looks like mine. I'm getting motivated.

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

I'll let you know if I commit to this route. At least with a cots alternator I can get service if I'm stuck somewhere. Plus the generic one is 150A at 24v. I have 3 extra neihoff units (I think): the 260, 300 and a 28v 570A unit I was going to use as an off grid gen. The 570 idea may get...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

This is nice. Brackets look manageable. The 150 I have looks like that and has a 2 belt pulley. But My truck is an a1 with the serpentine pulley. At first glance I don't think the serpentine pulley fits on that generic alternator. I'm wondering if that's a minor or major fitment issue. The...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

Regrettably, today the reg tripped on 14v ovco, haven't see that before. The inlet heater ran awhile, even with rapid warm up, bc it's effing cold. Of course, main volts were solid 24 on the gauge during that time bc my batts were maintained all night. On ign reset, main volts 28 solid, low...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

Yes I was thinking that. Pointing me to the cable fix definitely removed the fluttering. So thanks, I'd only have stumbled on that since the regulator is already a replacement that i put in there in late '22 when the old one went to zero voltage. the major change observed is the steady...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

Just got back earlier from a 400 miler RT to the heart of Utah to deliver a snowblower. Yesterday I was quite worried about the VR wave action so I put the 2 pulled batteries back in there, full set of 4 now. When I test ran the truck with 2 batts after the lbcd delete, the voltage kept...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

I'd be curious to know what the rate of response is both for overload and normal range. If you have a trending meter, that may be great info to know how fast the VR responds to volt changes both + and -. The overshoot would be telling as far as troubleshooting VR issues.

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

Just updating. I pulled the LBCD today. The A terminal on the cable was fully soldered, connected. It read good continuity to ground on the male pin. I haven't tested it yet but it is on the bench. Seems like a waste of good aluminum. I directly terminated the 24 batt to load & 12 batt to load...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

Yes and also the control signal/variable output is an analog circuit (field regulation driver). Big diff between a Victron "voltage converter" (or others) and a rotating AC alternator, The tolerances are wider. The alt is simpler and more robust, but less precise/accurate. I'm not observing...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

I think it's doing it but as an analog controlled device, there's a curve. The internal "control device" is simply a shunt, that shunt voltage feeds the VR. A 5% tolerance on the analog circuit could cause a 120A output before major voltage drop. & Idk what their shunt circuit tolerance is...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

These sales verbiages are always non specific, sounds like rhetoric. Analog control circuits are dated. "Rated capacity" has a time and power spec associated with it like any gen. Unless you have a current limited supply like found in ac inverters or frequency drives, you can't have a...

Clearly there's a flaw we're not privy too.

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

Firstly, The niehoff explanation makes total sense to me as brushless dc generators use an induced ac field internally to drive the rotating field current, whereas a brush directly connects voltage to the internal winding, making field current flow instantly. The induced field of the brushless...

LBCD replacement due to loose studs. CARNAGE!!

This was a quite entertaining thread for me as an EE, especially since I'm probably an active victim too. You guys are really masterful. My only contribution is that those Caps would be sized for both the wattage absorbed and the dv/dt that they could see. The overvoltage from dropping the...
