Your brake and signal lights are NOT on if your lights are not on.
TM (the -10 book suggested earlier) will tell you that. But, before you go crazy trying to figure out why the turn signals...

I would definitely spend a bit of time thumbing through the -10 (Operators Guide) Technical Manual. That helps get your head around the levers and switches. Simple things like wondering why you don't have brake lights...
