If you are not familiar with setting up R&P in a heavy truck, take/send your pumpkins along with your new R&P to a competent shop like MTP drivetrain Many, LA.
I thought the consensus was 3.07 IS ideal? How much faster than 65 do you want to cruise?
The deal at MTP is you ship them your chunks ($150) and they ship them back all 3.07ed up. If you let them do the chunk pulling, the price goes up. Joe is POC at MTP.
Why would anybody want to have gearsets made or install takeouts when brand new Meritor gearsets can be installed by MTP Drivetrain for $1750 per axle?
That is the same axle that was bolted on in Sealy in 1998. Get a quote on drive-in drive out gear change at MTP drivetrain in Many, LA. You can wait or get a rental car and go home.
Guys, the ring and pinion gearsets are a current item for Meritor. Vendors such as FMTV Truck Sales and MTP Drivetrain can also install these for you, either drive in drive out, or send your chunks to them.

Of importance is the section E discussion of reduction.
Also important is the observation: "The size of wheel 3 does not influence the behavior of the differential. It can therefore be chosen as space (or torque) dictate"...
Try calling Torres Metal Recycling in Sealy TX for more axles, they scrapped lots of Caimans as well.
As far as a MTV 5 ton gear swap, you would need all three axles from a Caiman and you would have the option of just replacing the entire axle assy as they are the same except for the ratio.
Yes, use a pipe wrench to take the huge plugs out. Be prepared to catch some gear oil. Then the shafts pull out using a long bolt, better bring an assortment of metric and standard bolts about 3" long around 3/8" fine thread. Auctionaddict may remember the exact size.
Almost all parts...
I'll never understand why a modern turbocharged/intercooled empty 17,000 lb diesel truck gets the same or worse fuel economy as a loaded 80,000 lb class 8 big rig.
Sweet! What is the trick to get the wheel bearing nut torqued properly, just the usual "tighten until it binds and then back off"? It seems like the torque on the nut directly influences the gear contact on the wheel end spider gears. Also, the knuckle is dry, correct? Saves time there.
Holy cow I had no clue you could pull the axle shaft like you pictured! I guess that is rear only? I am very apprehensive with working on those wheel end pinion gears. That system is SO UNUSUAL (to me anyway), I am used to wheel end planetaries.
It depends. If you get the entire axle, you do not need a mechanically inclined person, only a truck/trailer that can carry axles that weigh a ton each. If you pull the chunk/pumpkin/differential, you will need basic metric tools and the ability to toil for hours in the 98 degree sun. Call...
Can anyone elaborate on some of these Caimans having hydraulic front brakes? Is this an FMTV A1 thing with ABS? You can see the wheel cylinder pointing forward in this picture taken by Texas30cal. Also notice the unusual rear tandem suspension. Is this the same as MTV? The rear-rear axle is...
I figured I would pass this on since at this point I am 99% sure this is going to work. The stock FMTVs are 3.90 ratio at the differential and 2:1 at the wheel end. As we now know, this results in a truck that struggles with 55 mph. The solution is 3.07 ratio differentials available at...
