Hey,
No real excuse here just alot of other stuff going on....
What has been accomplished is alot of little things that don't require big $$:
-The rear brakes have been upgraded to 939 specs. As advised by the Bendix Engineer at the MATS grease zerks and relief holes have been added to the...
"Kaboom!" - that was the sound of my head exploding :-P
Interesting concept.....The gears are not straight cut so I'm not sure if it'll take the same amount of torque rating at 100% duty cycle in both directions....hmm
.....also the shifter rods would be sticking out in the opposite...
Some update info & pics
Hi,
Ok, here are some pics of the Spicer 8031C. Its an oldy but goodie. The Teeth & synchros look great and the bearings have no wiggle. All it needs is a good wire wheel, paint and some gaskets. They were nice enough to throw in a jackshaft and the original shifter...
Hood Bumps
Hi,
I finally found some pics of the desired hood clearance modification. These two pics show ex-Canadian trucks with nice looking "bumps.":-)
Here's some more pics....
-Take note of the location of the hyd. pump that drives the crane (pics 319,322.)
-Last two pics (298, 299) show M923 front bearing hanger
Pics for the Updtate
Hi, Pics are here.
IF....everything goes according to plan, you should see this thing at Aberdeen 09'. We'll work on it around the clock as the weather gets warmer.

-The first set are of the engine/tranny installation. I should've taken more pics of...
Hey JD,
To answer your question about driveshafts:
As it as stock, all of the 215" wheelbase 5tons have a very long two piece driveshaft assembly with a bearing hanger. I don't know the exact overall length but its 5-6ft. overall
We'd be cutting down the rear and elongating the front...
First gear in the RR:-------13.32:1
Low in Aux:-------------------2.59:1
Low in Transfer:-------------2.00:1
Axle Ratio:--------------------6.44:1
Overall Ratio in Low:----444.34:1 :-P
This will help immensely when executing a "pick & carry" with a heavy object.
The 8000 series Spicer...
Current Status of Project:
Hello,
I totally forgot to post here, even with the weather things are busy etc. I'll share the latest (pics on monday, sorry you'll have to use your imaginations.) We last left off with everything taken apart and questioning what our next move should be with the...
Agree 100% Chris. When operating a 939 you only have to use the weight of your foot to gently squeeze the pedal. If you use your leg muscles at all, you'll go through the windshield.
I'm hiding the sky
Were removing the 5th wheel so we can take it apart, wire wheel and grease it so it is fully functioning. It looks like its been used twice in its life.
*Thanks guys for the continued interest in this project. I forgot to add these pics:
Our Sam Winer care package arrived. (900 series front axle brake parts)
The Brockway donor truck mentioned earlier in this thread just happened to have Rockwell rears;-). They, along with 800 and 900 series...
Taking it Apart
Here is an update from Thanksgiving weekend:
-It took one day to remove the sheetmetal, cab, & engine/tranny. Still to be removed is the front winch, transfer case, 5th wheel, fuel tank, etc. I still haven't gotten around to making a fork bucket for the JD crawler but it did...
VERY SMALL UPDATE
Things are progressing nice and slowly:razz:. Thanks for your and everyone's interest. After we're done we'll open up our own version of "M-series Rebuild"
-An early Christmas package from Sam Winer is expected to arrive within the week that contains 900 series...
Small update
Hi,
It was rainy & windy this past weekend so it was perfect weather to fiddle around with mechanicals. We're a little closer at mating the engine to the transmission.
-Seperated 13spd. from old NTC-350 and pressurewashed
-Removed clutch assembly from 350
-Removed aluminum SAE...
Buggyman, after searching for an hour on this site and the web I came up with nothing regarding the 6453's exact gear ratios. The Eaton site offers info for similar 5 & 6spds but nothing for Spicers.
Although not exactly the same here are the Deuce's 3053A ratios so you get an idea of the...
We all should be commited  (catatonic)......
Yeah that makes perfect sense. That way you don't have to think about it and it operates like before. I'll be tearing the tranny apart to inspect this weekend. I thought I saw a reverse "ball" switch. I'll dig through the pdfs...
Buggyman said: "you seem to have this thing figured out!"
I'd like to let everyone know that, NO I certainly don't have everything figured out! We have the big picture in mind but as you know all the little things have to be solved as they surface.
Outstanding issues to resolve include...
