    XM791 Recoveries

Many thanks, I was able to download the PDF. Very interesting layout. Similar to a wagon style trailer that was used for the previous missile system. I found one of those trailers in very good condition at NCAR, but someone fought harder to buy it than I felt I could go.

Phil, The pdf of the TM would indeed be welcome as well as contact info for the FB group. Do I just search FB for Pershing Missile Alumni? Given the inside the door markings and such about the Autobaun, I suspect our two trucks were returned from Germany, but have no way of being sure.

Nice photo! I wish my trucks looked as nice. We haven't done much with or XM791's other than look for parts. I have been haggling over an M4 expandable body I found, but we just can't seem to get together (yet). That and we located a Pershing Missile that a museum has, but does not know what to...

Jollyroger has been researching his new truck and it seems there are not very many still in existance. It appears there were only 607 produced from 1941 through 1945. He is chasing rumors of York Hoover van bodies, but it would seem even fewer of those remain.

    XM791 Recoveries

It's been a long dry spell with the XM791's. So long in fact that I robbed the new batteries out to put in other rigs. But a recent find has me back messing with them again. That and the warmer weather. I managed to find some correct size used tires in a pile of tires when I was looking for...

Cranetruck, sorry for the delay responding. I have managed some fiddling with the XM791's but the weather and then a raging cold have had me offline for a bit. The rock guard panel mounting holes are behind the forward headlamps on 0001 and about a foot from the outer edge. I would say...

My son just dropped by to pick up the neat 24 volt DC 3/4 inch impact wrenches we got from Jeep-Jeep. I asked him about the radiator cover and he said that he had removed it to a safe place because he thought there was enough of it left to make a pattern.

Don't know. I was just to the farm to photo my daughters M43 missing lift shackle bracket. I will head back later this afternoon and take a hard look. I think the hanging down flap of material blew off on the trip home.

I was struck with the battery wiring on 0001. My years of electric car experiences tells me the frame ground could be a problem. Too many places for a loose connection to develop. Just better to run a heavy cable all the way to the engine block or starter itself for a ground. When I put the two...

Bjorn, Thanks for the switch info. I figured it should have a wider application than just this series of trucks. Yes, both of these trucks have the wiper primary filter. 0001 is missing the second heater fuel pump and 0011 is missing the lines and wiring to the pump. 0011 has a crimped...

They are a matched set of batteries. 850 Cold Cranking Amps which is as good as the U6TL's top rating. Some of the U6TL's were as low as 600 CCA. As an Electric Car dealer from the late 70's I got awfully good with battery differential problems. One bad cell in a series would just mess up...

Ghostdriver and I swapped in some higher CCA batteries so Ghostdriver could install the ones we borrowed from the M43. We got more CCA and supposedly the same AH capacity as the original U6TL's, but I wonder. It's hard for me to believe less plates and acid (less chemistry available) can have...

The tires on these things are unique. The one photographed had an FSN as well as a part number (why I took the picture). I could not track either of those at all. I will try harder when I get more time. It looks to me like the Goodrich's are noticably different from the Goodyears. I agree that...

    XM791 Recoveries

Sad to say, both of THESE XM791's are set up with electric horns. 0001 horn has been removed and the power wire is hanging loose. 0011 has the horn installed. The horn and the horn set up looks a great deal like an M37 electric horn. The horns are mounted externally up along the right side the...

Another wonderful afternoon in Colorado today. The good weather combined with a second free afternoon allowed Jollyroger and me to make more progress with our XM791's. We borrowed Ghostdriver's new batteries for her M43 and wired them into 0011 to test things. Again, no dead shorts. Fuel pump...

At this point, we are missing the expansible van bodies, but I have a couple of offers to sell should we get to that point with restoration. Yesterday we found 4 feet for the jacks so our stuff is looking more and more complete. I am sure we will need instructions when we get that far. Right now...

Had more time today until the winds started to blow so hard. Cold front is on the way. Anyhow, we now have the electrical to the point the starter will engage. It looks like we have a complete set of bows for one top at least. I checked out the tires a little further and I note two brands, BF...

    XM791 Recoveries

Good weather today coupled with a free afternoon has allowed us to inspect and investigate our XM791's a little further. We managed to make out more of the circular MP sign we found in one of the cabs. It says "Military Police" around the outside edge of the sign and then across the middle just...
