Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Thanks, I think this should get me covered. When you say L1 and L2... You mean whatever I'm using as "hot" from the head right?

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

@kloppk Got the contactor mounted and the new governor board installed. Ran the generator the "dumb" way last night. Want to finish this install! - I can't reach TB6. I had the engine reinstalled before I got the kit. It looks like you want to connect the supplied white J17 harness to TB6...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

I like that... I'm not sure how easily I can get to that spot now but I'll give it a look. Certainly worth reusing that L bracket!

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

I don't know where I left off... but I got the NorthStar 4000 watt generator head installed and the whole assembly shoved back in. I did have to move over the big main round connector and still have yet to remount the contactor. Complications in my case have been needing to rebuild the pigtail...

Yessir! You must've missed my post. I'm definitely in need!

    Kloppk you taking orders yet?

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

    > Restores Overload function. Opens contactor if either leg is overloaded or short circuited. No additional circuit breakers needed. > Optional components to restore operation of factory battery charger operation. For those keeping score at home.... While this might make me reliant on thinks...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

I'm almost certainly going to get one of the governor controller kits, but do you have a post somewhere that covers the features / what's included?

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

I went to wire my head to a terminal block, but I have to finish making the connector that mates to the very short wires coming out of the head (Reminder here). I've got the Northstar 1659201 head in there, which is the 4000/4500 surge head: I should then run the blacks through two breakers...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Interested! But at what price? Sucks about the nuts being different!

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

They wrote back and said the pins were the same... so I ordered one of the connectors. Pulled the pins out of my connector - they're sliiiightly larger than the ones included with their connector but I think a wee mashing with the pliers fixed that. Just ordered a terminal block from mouser to...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Submitted a help request to them. I think. Will see if they have a sick fix! The "universal" connector they've got is cheap like I'd expect, though the 4 wire doesn't look quite the same as this one. Possible the pins are the same... and if they aren't, well, time to get the loppers.

Oh cool, thanks. Will take a look.

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Yeah, 1659201: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200395477_200395477?cm_mmc=Housefile-_-RECEIVED-_-707-_-CONF From the parts diagram the guy said that 781829 is the generator-side of that harness, and that the panel-side isn't orderable. I think my options in order of preference...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

No identifying info on the connector that I can see. Re: the maintainers, that seems like a good price for a decent solution. If I can get this bit done! The parts guy at Northern Tool implied that "all" generators have the same type of connection to the panel and that this connector should be...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

I got the generator out of storage and finished cutting the hole for moving J7, mounted everything back up, put the muffler back on, reconnected the wires and fuel lines, rigged up a 24 volt battery with some old car batteries, and she came right to life. It has been a loooong time since I saw...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

kloppk, Did you ever finish development of your remote start compatible with standard gen heads / kit? With Winter coming, it's probably time to get my MEP out of storage and get it buttoned back together.

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Your signature link to those kits isn't working for me - don't have one of those generators but wanted to take a look. Man I would think it would be... the value it creates for the most commonly broken things on the MEP-831a's while turning them into a superior diesel generator, geez. But I am...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

@kloppk, what did you do with the alternator and battery charger in order to still charge the battery?

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

What was the limitation here? If you know the current on both legs, can't you show the combined output? Maybe leave contacts for a leg overload/imbalance indicator light or something... or a 3 way momentary toggle switch that lets you see combined versus per leg... Spitballing someone else's...
