Well, unless your 77 has an inline 6, it likely has more power than the M1009. The 6.2 has about the same power as the 305 V-8. The duramax would be cool but costly with much fab work. The Duramax is a powerhouse but they have just about engineered them out of owner maintenance status.

You will also need a strong back. There is nothing light on the truck except maybe the seat cushions.
