You are probably disconnecting the wrong wires. The two wires you are to disconnect shouldn't trip the DC breaker. Did you open the side box and visually inspect the DC bridge board and equipment in that box?
You need to find out if you are really not generating anything or not. From what you just described of your generator, you can't trust the outlet for the source of your test. The little breaker could be bad, the outlet might not even be wired up or a whole host of other issues could be...
