    Introducing Smokey

Well as sad as I am to let it go back, my time with “Smokey” has came to an end. I finished up the final touches to the paint work today. Got my wife to cut some vinyl stencils for me, and got the unit number, star, and tire pressure markings on. @patracy wanted his fathers old unit number put...

Most, if not all, of the gauge cluster lights didn’t worked with the original 194 bulbs. So I cleaned the contact areas of the printed circuit in the gauge cluster for the lights with 0000 steel wool, and updated the lights to LED. I also polished the lens with buffing compound. Much better.

Got a few things done today in between rain showers. Got the 60/40 seat from a 95-99 GMT400 body Chevrolet put in. Had to remove the seat tracks, and replace them with a set of tracks I had from a set of 81-91 Suburban front buckets. The buckets were junk, but I had already modified the tracks...

4L80e is doable. A/C is too, if you sacrifice 24V..

    Introducing Smokey

Got a few things done for @patracy today. Got a tach mounted on the column, boost gauge for the turbo mounted beside the 24v gauge, and built up a radio harness, cut the dash (had a hard time cutting a factory uncut dash. Goes against my love for keeping the civilian trucks original), installed...

    Introducing Smokey

@patracy came by and we got the woodland pattern laid out and sprayed. we followed the layout diagram for the most part, with a little creative artistry on the shapes of the brown and black. I think it turned out pretty good. Now to tidy up some of the interior wants on this beauty, and Andrew...

    Introducing Smokey

So I finally got around to fixing a few minor places on the initial walk around @patracy did. Got everything blocked, and wet sanded with dawn/water/scotchbrite, and 2 coats of the Gillespie 383 base sprayed on. It isn’t frame off restoration perfect, but it’s a lot better than it was. I’ll...

My understanding the WMA took over all the dirt roads that went anywhere thru the old timber company they made the WMA on the GA side of Treat. In my youth I personally didn’t go swimming in the frog pond, but some buddies trucks I knew did. In my teenage years I’ve had a 4WD back there a good...

funny you mention Treat Mtn, most of that is a WMA now. Big fines(and whatever else the DNR can charge) if caught up there were all the riding went on. They put a stop to folks going up there.

Yea, the wife wouldn’t be thrilled at all. You’d have to donate that communication shelter to me to live in most likely. I’m hoping when I get the suburban done, she’ll come around and a trailer shows up. I think here biggest gripe is having to pay insurance on so many vehicles. Guess I’ll need...

Acetone works, as well as 90% alcohol for a pre-cleaner. Anything to get oils, grease or wax off before paint. For the pre-cleaner, I use Wax and Grease remover. It all we ever used in the body shop and it works good. I’ve seen some pretty good Rattle can jobs. The key is good prep work.

    Introducing Smokey

Yes sir. Been in Buchanan since I was born. This CUCV belongs to another Buchanan resident on here. PATracy(Andrew) is the owner. I’d love to have a M1009, but I’ve taken a liking to the CUCV-IIs. As I was telling the other fellow, Once I get his truck done, I’ve got a ‘97 K2500 Suburban I’m...

This paint is the kind that has to cut with xylene, but I’m afraid if I cut it it’ll run worse. I appreciate the kind words. I’m going to go back and fix some of the dings in the bed, and that place I missed in the door. It drives me crazy because, I’m my own worst critic. Either way we’ll get...

    Introducing Smokey

I appreciate it. Glad to be here! I’ve dabbled in body work on and off since I was a teen. I’ve painted base/clear several times, but this Gillespie paint acts differently. It seems so thick, but trying to get it to lay the way I’m used to painting made it run in a few places. I’ll get it...

Thanks for adding me to the group. PA is a friend of mine, and I’ve been doing some work to his CUCV. He wanted me to post a few updates here. So far as metal work, Smokey has gotten both cab corners, and a left rear lower bed patch panel. Found some interesting trinkets in the cab corners when...
