Understood and thanks.
I think a few of the guys made it clear that front braking is a huge issue. Brakes on HMMWV's/M998's DON'T work the way most vehicles work. You disconnect a driveshaft and you disconnect brakes. Dangerous, and that is part of why I abandoned.
The other reason I abandoned...
Sounds difficult and potentially dangerous. If you link into 4WD and forget you’re in HIGH you will break things.
Nah, I’m done with trying to figure out 2WD
Thanks though!

Looks like I will be ordering. For less than 300 clams I might prevent issues for myself AND OTHERS by preventing runaway wheel assembly. Thanks Dock Rocker and Patracy!
[EDIT - 377 clams including shipping. Just ordered!]
SHARECROPPER:
Your images are very helpful. Your thread is excellent. The fact that you're doing all this while dealing with multiple back surgeries and joint replacements is remarkable and inspirational.
Ultimately, the idea of 2WD was appealing, BUT the fact that there will never be hub lockers available means the idea was a misfire.
The idea of testing the vehicle without a front driveshaft would indeed allow a feeling for 2WD, but without the ability to disconnect the hubs from the rest of...
No one ever spoke about cutting holes or building selectable front hubs.
Once I realized that there is no way to select front hubs, I dropped the idea of changing the transfer case.
Milcommoguy and sue, I think your comments are just slightly out of bounds, and are not quite on point.
Helpful...
Is this the unit? (Ignore the electric cylinder attached to the lower right hand side. Usually there is a hole there.)
Your images show an installed piece but your images don't cone down on that area so it is hard for me to identify.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
Excellent information and making me think BowTie is gonna be the way I'm gonna go.
Looks like your still in the midst of your project. It is an excellent read!
Did BowTie help with the TM wire and adapter plate, and did they help with sourcing a 4 speed shifter?
Excellent thoughts. I had not considered. Thanks.
There might be an issue with mating up the new transfer case to the stock shifter due to the 2 wheel extra option, I guess, unless I configure the stock shifter to bypass that setting.
1987 Slantback with 6.2 and currently with TH-400.
So, about to do a lot of stuff, and I figured if I'm gonna do a Bowtie 700R4 swap to my Slantback, I might as well consider swapping in a 2WD capable transfer case.
I want to do highway vacation driving, so 2WD should help with MPG relief...
