That's why I left the state. Well, one of many reasons, really.

Okay, it wasn't with an M1009, or using a Bubba rope, but the one time I tried to pull a large forklift out (using two snatch blocks and an 8,000-lb. winch) I ended up slightly moving the 80,000-lb. building I used as an anchor, and ripped the rear cross member off the frame. It was a govt...

Looks like you raided my garage.

I did (somewhat skeptically) add Seafoam to the oil in a 232 Six that had a ticking lifter, and which had been ticking for years. It got quiet.

I don't see why towing/driving with different diameter tires would be so bad with a Gov-Lok. Sure, the spider gears get to turn a bit more than usual, but nothing compared to on vehicles with central axle disconnects in the front.

Because bias tires have far stronger sidewalls, and as an added bonus also provide better conformability. Both very nice qualities for trail use.

That would be highly unusual. But I bet they were all radial tires.

Ah, yes. That photo brings back some memories, too.

For a while I had a bad habit of drowning my Jeep, so I can relate to such frequent oil changes. That's also when I stopped using synthetic oil - it got way too expensive.

Like you mentioned, you have to pay to play. I gave up on mud and do my dangdest to stay out of it these days. Same amount of play, much less pay. But more roll overs. Now that you mentioned mortar mix and front brake wear, it reminded me of an excursion in a wet, sandy riverbed. Predictably got...

I had better motivation, partially because I 'wheeled in mud almost every night and weekend, and also because those were inboard drums. Pulling off four hubs and bearings every couple of days was no fun, especially when in it was in addition to fixing other breakage. Thought about putting...

I can believe that. After putting larger drum brakes on my Jeep, they couldn't be adjusted after a few days. Pulled the drums off and found perfect replicas of the inside of the drums, except they were made from mud. Mud is murder on drum brakes. Put disk brakes on all four, problem solved.

And don't overlook that there's still about 14.6 psi in that tire.

I kinda like the look of that engine as it is. Too bad you'll have to disturb the mud in places, like for checking the oil.

Try to keep it together this time, too, okay? And don't roll just to show off all the paint underneath.
  16. The FLU farm

    Terminus M1009

Hey, that's no laughing matter. I grenaded a 10-bolt on what was basically a wet lawn, with macho tires.
  17. The FLU farm

    Terminus M1009

I like them, mostly because they make the vehicle look purposeful. Tall and wide tires may look macho, but with a low-output diesel and 3.08 gears, little skinny ones look intelligent to me.
  18. The FLU farm

    Terminus M1009

You really are planning on rolling that one, aren't you?

That'll be one much photographed undercarriage should you end up on your side, cucvrus.
  20. The FLU farm

    Terminus M1009

Yeah, I would've been very happy with getting two years out of those drum brakes. But two weeks was pretty dismal, and when all we 'wheeled in was mud there was no reason to expect any improvement. Adding insult to injury, they were inboard drums, so not easily removed for cleaning, either...
