Bjorn, don't know how much room you have below the filter when mounted, but, I pop a hole in the bottom of the filter, let it drain then take it off. It's no to messy that way.
On some of the newer small engines we are seeing at work, we sometimes come across a filter that we don't have a wrench for. I never even thought about diong it like that! I tell the apprentices at the shop,"don't say you know everything, 'cause you learn something new every day"...... SEE...
