Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

Quick update on my my tire results - I finally got the truck out on the open road today. I did some higway cruising between 55 and 70+mph (speedo was buried). I'm very happy to report no vibration or shimmy at any speed. I never got the tires spin balanced, I figured I'd try them first before...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

I used a 5 gallon bucket to stabilize my hand as the wheel rotated with all 4 wheels off the ground and the truck in gear. I know, not exactly the most precise runout setup, but I'm not convinceed any of this is making a significant difference or worth obsessing over. Having all wheels off the...

both, and then reassembled the rim so that the low spots on each part aligned

I marked the low spot (the spot nearest the center). There is plenty of room to mark it while spinning, I’m not sure what you are saying with the suspension.

Nice, that’s a great deal on 2020 tires. Yep, mounting tires w starting fluid is a real fun “hold my beer, watch this” activity. I’ve done it with some tractor tires and it’s quite a show.

Yes. I bought some extra studs, but no extra nuts. For anything that didn't go on smooth (the ones that galled), I just used a new stud and pulled a good nut from my 12 bolt wheels. Are they supposed to be 1 time use?

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

I have not torqued anything yet, but plan to do so tomorrow. Maybe I'll back down a bit from the recommended torque, but these threads do not feel lubricated. I know technically they are a little bit, but they sure don't feel like it. Maybe it's just the nuts and studs on the 24 bolt...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

Crap, a little late for that... Can you reference the problem? I actually researched it before doing it and found folks supporting it, particularly when using lock nuts like the nuts on the hmmwv wheels. For what it's worth, I didn't do the studs that attach the wheels, just the studs that...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

Nothing is better than new shoe day. I got my 4 new tires + spare all mounted today with the runflats. Even after re-mounting the 1 wobbly tire on a different rim, it still has some side to side runout, so it's the tire and not the rim or mounting. I'll probably run all of them down to...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

Will do, but highway speeds will be a bit in the future. My SF97 has been brewing for about 1 month, so I'm hoping I'll have it titled and on the road some time in April, but at the mercy of the government timeline. I have a short stretch of private road (behind the neighborhood gate) and a...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

Agreed, but I think this might make the case to have the red dot opposite the valve stem rather than aligned. From what I understand, the red dot is the area of maxium radial force, so putting it with a heavy valve stem (that further increases the radial force at that point) would be the worst...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

Is "low" the spot that runs nearest the center of the wheel (up and down)? I assume we're not talking side to side runout, but not sure.

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

If mounting on aluminum rims (which theoretically should have no significant variation), you line the red dot up with valve stem. For stamped steel wheels, there should be a mark indicating the low spot, but I'm guessing these wheels aren't "normal" steel wheels. At least that's what I've...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

I've got a white and red dot on my tires, no yellow. Even if the white is same as yellow, I've read that yellow should be ignored if there is a red dot anyway, so I guess I'm going with red. The red dot should be aligned with the "lowest" point on the wheel and there is supposed to be a dimple...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

I got this gallon jug from oreilly today, looks like maybe the same stuff, but pre-mixed. I used it to install the runflats in 2 more tires, it's definitely slick and snotty and made things easier.

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

Yeah, I got what you were saying and agree completely that it's a good idea to carry something to cut back the tire. My carry comment was a digression also, but wasn't meant to be directed at you. Your comment just made me think of all those people carrying glocks in their waistbands having...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

If you were the kind of fellow who likes to shove a glock down your pants without a holster, I'd probably recommend you keep the chamber clear (among other things). Understanding why anyone would carry like that in the first place, that's a whole other question, but I'd bet it is pretty common.

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

It's still expensive, but macmotors has it for $45 per tube and says one per tire. I decided to skip the lube for the same reason you are stating - I don't plan to ride on the runflat any longer than needed. I also figured a tube of lube in the tire could make balancing an even bigger...

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

One of mine had a visible shimmy side to side (just the tire, the rim has no shimmy). I hope it's not a bad tire. It's a new tire, but I didn't buy them locally, so it will be a pain to return/exchange if it turns out to be a bad tire.

Runflat removal and install - some good and bad

No on-road testing yet. I got 2 of them installed and won't get to the other ones until later this week. I did do a test run on jack stands with the tires spinnng and one of the 2 tires looks wonky when spinning. The wheel/rim runout looked good, just the tire appears to have a significant...
