The "Road Oiler" gets overdrive (700R4 Swap)

With my 1028/700r4 combo as a daily driver, I got about 17mpg.

Go back and read posts 98 & 99. Those are two of the many options for controlling lock up.

The "Road Oiler" gets overdrive (700R4 Swap)

When I was looking for a torque converter for my build, the vast majority were 3 bolt converters. I think I only came across 1 6 bolt converter and it was substantially more expensive. My flex plate also has the 6 six holes.

The "Road Oiler" gets overdrive (700R4 Swap)

I'll answer for what I did for lockup. I used a TCI kit that has a 4th gear pressure switch to get automatic lockup in 4th gear. I put a double throw switch on the dash. Up is auto lockup in 4th gear. Middle is off, no lockup. Down is manual lock in 2nd 3rd or 4th. Auto lock is very nice for...

The "Road Oiler" gets overdrive (700R4 Swap)

I've been averaging just over 17 mpg for several tanks now. I keep my rpm's right at 2000, between 55-60mph. I've had it up to 70 mph but my truck seems to enjoy 55-60 a lot more. I'm sure it wasn't related, but the last time I was doing 70 my governor broke. Since then I'm a little shy...

The "Road Oiler" gets overdrive (700R4 Swap)

There is a full manual valve body some people have done with the 4L80. No more electronics, but you have to shift up and down the gear range yourself.

Bearing WILL FALL OUT! Yes, that was a fun surprise. I used a pen magnet and was able to collect the ones that fell deep into the case. It was also fun to count 120 roller bearings to make sure all were present and accounted for.

I would also recommend doing a pressure test of the trans. As throttle is applied you should get immediate pressure rise. Here is the page from the ATSG Service Manual for the 700r4.

The "Road Oiler" gets overdrive (700R4 Swap)

Is your TV cable connected to the transmission? Getting the cable connected to the TV linkage while the trans is up in place might not be much fun. I wrangled with the dipstick tube for a while too to get it into position. I'm glad you backed off when the torque converter wasn't set in all...

The "Road Oiler" gets overdrive (700R4 Swap)

I believe that '87 up is the preferred year range for a 700r4 core. I think the earlier ones didn't have the auxiliary valve body.

The "Road Oiler" gets overdrive (700R4 Swap)

That picture of your cracked trans looks exactly like mine. Right at the governor door, wrapping up and over the top, looks like its about to split in two. JB weld didn't help mine either. I was amazed when I pulled the trans out to see how bad it was. My trans mounts had pretty much turned to...
