I never updated this thread and in searching for a totally different thread, I found this one.
The reason that winch driveshaft was getting so personal with the steering box was the crappy A2 style engine crossmember has sagged so much, it's sucked the framerails together.
There are threads...
So I got some time to mess with this today, after I finished parting out one of our parts trucks (http://www.steelsoldiers.com/conversations/87435-lot-work.html).
I had pulled the front bumper off to put the tan bumper back on and I figured as long as I was doing this, I'd loosen up all the...
Had to push the rails apart about 1/16" or 1/32" with the hi-lift to get the extensions in. Was right at the ragged edge of fitting. Once the extensions were in, we still had to pull them in the rest of the way with the hi-lift on one side and the come-along on the other side.
See pics.
The idea is that the tolerances in all of the bolt holes give some adjustability. Loosen everything up, shift the winch over, re-tighten. Frame rails stay where they are and hopefully the winch shifts over just enough to clear the box. Doesn't have to be much.
I glanced at them last night and they appeared fine.
I think it's the angle I shot the picture. Compared it to my other trucks last night and it looked the same.
I don't think so but you will see it soon. I believe I am going to try and shift the winch over, per Gringeltaube's...
Ok, I am having the same issue.
Truck: 1987 AMG USAF M35A2C. Not a gasser rebuilt as a multi, etc.
Winch: Came off my '67 M35A2. I believe the driveshaft is the correct tapered multifuel driveshaft (the driveshaft is tapered to clear the bellhousing, not the steering box, correct?). Winch...
Wow, that's really close. Mine has tons of clearance room. Perhaps it is an incorrect or homemade (built by a driveshaft shop) unit?
When the sun comes up, let's see some more pictures.
