Apologize.. quoted your post by mistake. Meant to be another's post quoted. Fixed it up above now. I'd suggest us two delete our post to help clean up the thread of unnecessary content.... but that option is unusually not available on this board to members (mods/admins can though) . If...

****NOT GOOD IDEA for full time use ... mayyyyyyyybe if it is nothing more than a Parade Queen. Reason being is easy to understand. Look under trucks with no outer gear reduction or Portal design..... notice the size of their pumpkin... hint:- they are much larger pumpkins etc. compared to...

question with a selectable hub is...... will the ring and pinon be strong enough to run at 1:1. If you look at trucks of this size w/out hub reduction or a hub planetary there 3rd member is a HUGE pumpkin... which leads one to think the R&P inside is HUGE too. What I was lead to believe...

Scott knows more than many so odds are in his favor on knowing the make up of the tranny. Trust but verify they say sooo.. Look at what all the gears are please in the 3060. If "first gear" is same ratio in each then we know it is as Scott suggest that 7th is in the T-case.... if 3060's...

Not taking it personal at all and agree that who knows exactly why the switched. For sure. change over may have been for inventory reasons..... mentioned that in various threads long ago. Will just have to go with my own peace of mind I guess. I trust my welder. He's not a backyard type...

May just be peace of mind... but then again...what was it that made TACOM feel it had a demonstrable benefit?

yes, using NOS 6x6 for high pinion. toatal with shipping and fabrication around 2500. New is what... twice that if not more??

Just got my car back from shop thus I can stop daily driving the 1078 soooooo hopefully sometime in next month or so the fellow I've lined up to do my conversion can start on that. Will try to get him to shoot pics. Fellow am teaming up with has equipment and experience to weld to cast housing...

or as Im doing, use a full 6x6; be it A0 or A1, intermediate axle and modify it's spring perches to mount into the M1078 leaf system. It will already have the proper off set since it was used with matching chassis, engine and tranny anyway.

Did you ever hear from Meritor about if they had any clue why TACOM requested the change to the High Pinion Axle?

    FMTV Highway Speed

"older" OEM A0, A1's with 4x4 rear axle pumpkin is offset driver side. Seems some have pulled 4x4 axle..... spun and flipped it 180degrees it to get the needed pumpkin offset on passenger side ... then installed the Powerdivider chunk. This requires remaking spring perches too. Spin and flip...

When you get chance.... ask Meritor why the switch to what has appears to be a version of the Intermediate axle in 2008? For all we know it was simply due to thinning out their over supply of them? Curious. thanks for passing on reliability info.

According to http://www.allisons.org/ll/4/Stewart-S/FMTV/ and several other sources the split is 30/70 front to rear in Highway mode but I well could be missing some math based on rear end and/or tranny ratios affecting things or something like that.

    FMTV Highway Speed

wouldn't that only be a 30% increase in torque??? it is already getting 70% in Highway mode.

PS no matter what you do.... offer the best drive shaft the studies suggested (but were not adopted in favor of using the intermediate axle instead) along with tranny braces that add strength to the Tcase housing and the bell housing. And/or kits for using an Intermediate axle to replace...

Another option.... and may be the easiest.... is put an overdrive between the engine and tranny. Move the rear axle back a bit to accommodate. Add new driveshafts. Turn up the rear axle when you move it back for better alignment with the Tcase.

    FMTV Highway Speed

IMHO that is not the best route to go. Nothing wrong with having AWD and the existing Granny Gear (labeled as "First Gear")in the existing system. When in true 4x4 "mode" the ratios available (1st thru 5th) pretty much cover everything someone needs when off road. It covers from what would be...

We discussed an appropriate angle to make a wedge block at for the rear but far as I know.... no one has done it. Would have myself but decided to go with a 6x6 front (intermediate) axle instead. Mine should be installed by Feb.?? march?? Waiting for locker to arrive and get installed first...

Sorry it didn't work out well for you. Has for many others based on what read in here and in discussions with him myself.
