    M37 Mystery Problem

Yes that was painful. Took almost 6 months and easily $800 in new parts. Well at least I have lots of brand new parts that I don't have to worry about. Stupid choke cable. Unreal.

    M37 Mystery Problem

I want to give you all an update on what happened here. I finally figured it out and its so stupid its unreal. However stupid this is, if it happened to me it could happen to anyone. I had rebuilt the carburetor. When putting the carb back in the truck there are obviously lots of things to...

    M37 Mystery Problem

I kind of gave up for a bit. Its winter and cold and i wouldnt be driving her around anyway, plus i have a few other car projects I shifted to. Every now and then I will jump in and turn her over to see if she will start and nothing. Ill get back into this in spring. I WILL figure this out!

    M37 Mystery Problem

Ok here is the latest. I did what Glcaines suggested which is to pull the #1 plug and have someone turn the engine over looking at the spark plug with a finger over the spark plug hole. I am 100% sure that it is sparking on the compression stroke. So it's not a camshaft issue. I know many here...

    M37 Mystery Problem

WELLLLLL.... I bypassed the filter capacitor and re-installed new condenser and points. Got rid of the Pertronix. And... NOTHING. Wont start. I pulled one of the plugs to check for spark and I do have spark. Just wont start. Not even a hint of wanting to start either. I did gap the new points...

    M37 Mystery Problem

After reading that last post I did some research and found quite a few references to that filter capacitor causing similar issues. I have ordered a replacement capacitor and I think I'm going to put the pertronix back in after I change that filter capacitor out and see if that fixes it. Maybe it...

    M37 Mystery Problem

I did not take out the filter capacitor. Capacitors of that age certainly go bad. I'd rather not bypass it as I do have a 2-way radio in the truck but maybe I can order a replacment. Thats a great suggestion. I wonder if that bad capacitor would cause my symptoms. I'm going to order one right...

    M37 Mystery Problem

Guys, Does anyone know the part number for the breaker plate on the M37. It's the round plate that the points and condenser sit on. It was discarded when I replaced the points for the Pertronics. I see a few on Ebay but their part numbers don't match anything in the TM9 book

    M37 Mystery Problem

Well the coil was early on the possible fault list and I did buy the expensive one from John. That really didnt change a thing sadly.

    M37 Mystery Problem

Well at this point i will try anything. I'm going to order new points and condenser and see what happens. What do I have to lose!

    M37 Mystery Problem

Well..... I just don't know what to do next. I replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the source of the fuel in the crankcase. That may or may not have been the case because she wont start. Right after I put the pump in she started really well then petered out like usual. I thought it was...

    M37 Mystery Problem

Here is a short Friday night update. I had already drained the oil and left the plug out and fill cap open for a few days to let any remaining fuel evaporate (maybe). I have since filled her with new Rotella oil. Got the new fuel pump today and put it in with no issues. I did mark the...

    M37 Mystery Problem

None yet. Waiting patiently for the new fuel pump. Midwest said that the regular manufacturers have stopped making them so I had to search elsewhere. Oddly I found the pump at Summit Racing and they said it would ship on the 18th. Everything else is done just waiting for this. Replaced the...

    M37 Mystery Problem

I have ordered a new fuel pump and some more Rotella. I'm starting to think that this might be the issue. This is making the most sense so far. Still have the rough idle situation but maybe that is also related to having fuel in the oil.

    M37 Mystery Problem

Oh I may have discovered a big problem here. I checked the oil dipstick and it was higher than the high fill line. Several months ago I noticed the same thing and drained the oil. The oil seemed very thin at the time. I put new oil and made sure I was right in between the lines on the dipstick...

    M37 Mystery Problem

Here is todays update. Got in the truck early this morning and she started right up. This is different than before where it would take weeks of sitting there or me pulling the plugs to air the cylinders out. Very rough idle. Didn't need any choke to start. Idle sounds more like a Harley than...

    M37 Mystery Problem

Ok here is the labor day update. Pulled the top of the carb and adjusted the float level. Cleaned out the bowl and cleaned out the jets (no contamination anywhere). Turned the engine over with a camera recording the carb and once the bowl filled up the gas stopped flowing. Seems like that is...

    M37 Mystery Problem

Are there any good guides to checking and adjusting the float level?

    M37 Mystery Problem

Here is the latest. Brand new coil, new old stock not the chrome imports, new cap and new rotor. Got it all installed, and she started right up. Instantly. Note that the truck has sat for about 5 days without turning over. Ran exactly like before, few minutes no problems. A little grumbly but...

    M37 Mystery Problem

It's not a stuck float. Checked it this morning. Either something is fouling the plugs (not fuel) or the coil just doesnt have the umph (maybe thats fouling the plugs?) We will know soon enough, coil should be here in a few days.
