When using the standard heater control box, the HI mode is locked out during start-up. The calibration of fuel and air flow is critical for a proper start. I checked the wiring in the box and the diagrams are not drawn correctly as shown in the attached images.
The circulation pump is only...
Found a cable, actually for the Benmar heater, but can easily be modified for the SW units. Also, a control box, which I don't need any longer, so you'll get a PM shortly.
The HI/LO ranges are applicable to the coolant heaters and a circulation pump can be installed to run in the "HI" mode.
As...
Correct, the control box is the same for the SW coolant and personnel heaters, which both rely on the wick for ignition. The Benmar coolant heater uses a different control box and has no wick. Can't believe the bucks!
Replaced the South Wind personnel heater on the 8x8 with a Benmar heater, as called out by the TM for this vehicle. The Benmar does not use a wick, but a ceramic vaporizer and should be more reliable.
Sure enough, it fired up on the very first test run after having been unused for perhaps 15 or...
Did you ever get the contact info?....It would be nice to be able to rebuild the fuel valves I have sitting around, I can always use some spare parts, gaskets, O-rings etc....
Chuck, make sure that the grounding of the control box is intact.
The lamp is tested by pushing it ("Push to test"), that way you know that the all important light works and ground is connected.
Here is the controller for the m656 (cargo), the xm757 (truck tractor) also had a fuel tank selector...
Finally found the coolant heater with the proper circulation pump as called out in the 8x8 TMs (except for the correct mounting brackets, but those can be fabricated). :-)
The tag states that it was tested in 1982, including for high and low speeds.
Looking forward to testing it again...
At some point in time they must have done away with the coolant circulation pump shown in the TMs for my 8x8...
What parts are you missing, I may have something?
The concern about the exhaust fumes from around the engine when heating the oil pan is real IMHO, if the cab is not air tight or has...
Nice install Tom, doesn't take much more space than the hot water heater. The one shown uses air from the inside of the cab, though.
The fuel pump is not visible.
You are very welcome Bob.
David, I'd like to find a rebuild kit for the fuel control valves, got two units in need.
Here is the wiring for the control unit and heater, flipped sideways so that the text in this thread won't get spread out all over.
Bob, it works like this, first push the light on the controller to make sure it is working and there is voltage.
Next hold the momentary contact switch in "start" position, it will turn on the fuel pump, the blower (runs at reduced speed) and the ignitor. The "HI/LO" switch should be in "LO"...
Ethan, why don't you plan a trip to my place, I'm only a couple of hours away and I can show the projects you are working on as installed on my vehicles, the HIAB, the alcohol evaporator, the fuel burning heater etc...
I'm here most of the time generally speaking. Do a mapquest for zip 24120.
Good purchase Ethan. That heater is shown in my 8x8 manual with a separate pump to circulate the coolant (image below).
You need a controller with a 5-pin connector on the back plus a separate lead, which goes to 24 vdc.
