Do you have a scan of the spec from a military manual, by chance?
This is how the transmission fluid was specified for my 6-speed Allison for the xm757 in the 1960's.
Yeah, it's pretty much ready for the road, but I have reservations about the tires.... they do hold the pressure, but there are lots of "weather cracking" visible.
One reason for the automatic (in the m656/xm757 8x8s anyway) was to be able to drive faster off-road and not losing momentum when shifting. The 6-speed Allison in my 757 has very small ratio increments and shifts flawlessly in bumpy hills etc.
The "Premium Tractor Hydraulic" fluid that I decided on for my Allison trans in the xm757 8x8 meets the "C-4" specifications, but has a much lower viscosity rating than the 15W-40, about 6 cps at 100°C (or equivalent to a 10W engine oil).
So what role does the viscosity play here?
On the HEMTT I looked at the other day, a fuel filter was located as marked in the image below, does yours have a clear/amber bowl, is it heated and what micron rating do you use? I have the same filter installed on my 8x8 and am curious....
Do you have a better image of this detail?
Had an opportunity to look one over the other day coming through Meadows of Dan here. These things are massive, restoring a HEMTT is not for everyone, that's a given. This one had the armor plates on the cab and was the truck tractor version with a rear mounted winch. The winch was on the...
Glad you were able to keep the truck under control.
Seems like they have a fair number of commercial type solutions on that vehicle.
So, which came first, the Oshkosh 8x8 firetrucks or the HEMTT (same design)?
Question for you dma, what is the MS number for the transmission temp gauge, also which is the matching sending unit number? The parts manual is not clear on this.
Thanks,
Beautiful! Of course, if you mess up one tiny detail, it'd stand out like a sore thumb. :-)
Are you going to paint the fasteners?
How is the engine brake activated on the HEMTT?
Great pictures! Intersting study in construction method...flat panels, straight lines, the welding....
The lightswitch seems a little hard to reach (and see) while driving.
