Copper wire? I thought mechanical gauge was when oil actually ran to the back of the gauge? I have my gauge hooked up to the left rear engine oil sending unit port and my oil capillary is only about 2 ft long from the engine to the back of the gauge. Are we on the same page?
I think you do need a sending unit socket. I am not 100% sure but I think so. But maybe it was an open end wrench. I am not sure. I have done several but don't remember. I am getting old. Take a look and let us know. Or I can look at an engine tomorrow if you would like.
Left rear of the engine. Right up against the firewall on the block. I just bought a couple brass fittings at a hardware store and hooked them up so both worked. I don't have any pictures but it is fairly easy. I hope that helps.
I think the best place to check oil pressure is at the oil pressure sending unit location. You can get a brass fitting and tap right in to that location and still retain the oil pressure indicator light. And it is safer because the oil pressure sending capillary will be a lot shorter. That is my...
