Was just relating what I read. Have not done my own homework, but am wondering, have they got the numbers wrong? What are the front axles actually rated for, and how much weight is actually on them?
Think it's been pretty well-understood for a long time that the front axles on the deuces and 5-tons are close to being overloaded when you add winches to the front of these trucks. Dunno how conservative those ratings are, but that's how the numbers add-up.
Would be surprised if all those plates add up to much more than 500lbs. Isn't the front axle rating going to become an issue pretty quickly? Remember reading a white paper someone published about adapting these M939 trucks to serve as wildfire trucks and if I remember correctly the front axle...
Will take some pictures of the M936A2 counterweights next time I go over to the yard. Think toolboxes or maybe hydraulic reservoirs or something, anything, would make a lot more sense. Seems stupid to add weight to something that's already so heavy.
We have one of those M936A2 wreckers with the counterweights. Would be easy to reproduce and can take some measurements if anyone would like to take a crack at it.
