It was long ago decided that the 3053 was the only trans that would fit and that the OD kit I made was the only option to get what you want. There was very little interest in my kit even though I gave them away at cost so they are no longer available.
if you add overdrive and then use it to go faster your fuel mpg will stay the same. the only way you will improve mpg is to add some od and then drive even slower. also the size of the tire has nothing to do with the final drive ratio which is simply the trans ratio times the rear ratio = ? the...
new flywheel $200, used trans $200, good used clutch $100??, linkage etc from an A2 $100 do it yourself $000
of course you can spend as much as you like to maybe $4000, still a valuable upgrade for a truck that should be worth 4 to 5 times as much.
well, it has been done in reverse, a 3116 has been put into an A2 and that requires all the same sort of changes. even for a bobber the od kit gives better choice of off road and on road gearing since it only changes 5th gear.
tom
i think it is still WAY cheaper in the long run to put a 3053 trans in. heck it would be cheaper even if you bought my od gear set as well. assuming you can do the work yourself and i assume you can as the r&p swap gets real $$$ if you have to pay someone to do it. we already know that there are...
sometimes other methods work, sometimes they give false info. the simple math formula for this is :
mph = ( rpm * radius) / ( 168 * ratio)
using loaded radius is more accurate, ratio is final drive ratio including trans, rears, etc.
tom
not sure what tire size you are really going to use so i did the math with radius being 21", trans with lockup converter, 4.90 diffs. 2200 rpm would be 56.1 mph, 2500 rpm would be 63.7 mph. still think it would be worth it? i think only if you really want to keep the auto.
with 4.90 rears and...
the only part that could be a variable would be the trans. everything else is on the net or ebay. of course you will have to factor in shipping, but that is a constant.
tom
what is a good 6 speed allison? if you are thinking of a 3060, it is 1: too big 2: electronic and would be a problem to program. any smaller allison would not handle the engine.
3053 trans $200
gear set $1300
clutch $300
flywheel $200
driveshaft $150?
linkage etc $150?
do it yourself you could only have $2500 in it.
does it increase the value of the truck?
i know of one being done now so we will see how it goes.
tom
keep in mind that no one has ever found a trans with this much OD that will fit in the short space available. given that you would spend, $3000 doing this, (a guess) it would take some time for payback, but driving at 65-70 is much nicer than 48.
tom
no, i am refering to this thread. most OD trans are just that, OD, while the 3053 with my gear set is more like another gear which is what is needed with such a low rear ratio. i am very surprised no one has done this swap, i think it would be the best of both worlds.
tom
the 3116 can be turned up to more power than the multifuel. with a stock 3053 you will have some more mph, but not much. with gear kit you will have 67 mph at 2500 rpm. there is a mph/rpm charton the od gear website for comparason.
tom, i don't consider 450 rpm much of an increase, and with out lockup i agree it is just no good.
if you look at post #11, i suggested the spicer early on, you must have missed it.
as for an overdrive auto, allison NEVER made one in the AT or MT line, they were all 1:1 final drive.
allison...
.69 od = input turns .69 and output turns 1
.69 x 1.44 = 1
44% increase in rpm
the formula is ((y2 - y1) / y1)*100 = your percentage change, where y1 is .69 and y2 is 1.
so it really is almost 45%, i just rounded down.
tom
joking? no, not really. it has been mentioned earlier that going back to the spicer might be the bast option since a od auto will not fit and/or does not exist.
i am not aware that the cat can really turn that much faster. if it could then there would be no need to change trans. it should be...
