Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

There are UV coatings. However, due to the issues in Texas recently, all plastics are through the roof - seems there's lots of chemical plants in a state with (usually) low electrical costs close to oil production. Metal will keep going up though at a certain point it will level off when it...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

Y'know I was in a different place, financially, when I bought my Deuce. MTVR would be real nice for my goals. With your 7 ton off-road rating, you can pretty much use anything. Another MTVR thread here, the builder estimated the wood weight from building at 1.5 tons. I have seen those FRP...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

Yeah, that is cheap stuff. I was looking at fencing some land recently and corrugated metal was cheaper than wood. Not sure how to seal it though. Most of the roof will be covered with solar panels so the material can be pretty thin, I just need it sealed off from the elements.

Yeah, the exterior cladding I'm still not sure what it's gonna be. I'll probably use 5052 aluminum for any exterior, it has the best corrosion resistance (of the 3 grades that I see commonly sold). 5052 is also cheaper, though I don't know the metals market and maybe there's a reason for this...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

Not sure this is for me. I don't want to say I'm building on the cheap, because in some areas I'm spending a lot, but in some areas I don't want to spend too much either. After all, this is all going on a Deuce, not a Ford F750. I have ~250 sq/ft of exterior wall to cover. Looking at an...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

I have no plans to bend any tubing. I plan to cut and weld steel tube. Essentially, I'll be building a framework. The sub-floor will be an aluminum box contained inside this framework. I plan on riveting the outer skin (material still to be determined) and the sub-floor box. Haven't decided...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

120 miles away, cost savings might be offset by travel. I'll look at them when I make my big order, when I finalize my plans. I've already changed my layout, yet again. Wanted the align the sink, shower and gray water tank better. And I'll be building my bed out of a combination steel tube...

Actually, my plans are to have a perpendicular motorcycle holder and one of these: Won't necessarily use that specific carrier, but you get the idea. That motorcycle is 7' 2" long, it'll fit behind nicely.

TLDR: Stuff about my camper build, if you have problems with my threads, you might want to skip this one or look at the pretty picture and shake your head about all the stuff I'm doing wrong. Thought I'd write up a little update. Like many on here, life takes us in many directions and my time...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

I did a 20 min search on FRP SIP panels. Mostly I come up with manufacturers that don't list prices which doesn't always mean that they won't sell small quantities, but I'd want to find one in my area to avoid freight. I did find some snippets on a couple of sites, one that has thickness of...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

It's in Tukwila, near Southcenter Mall. They don't have any samples for the 1/4" so I'm just gonna go there, probably next week, to take a look at the sheets. They carry other panels so I figure I'll just look around. They don't list weights/prices on their web site which is a little...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

Ok, so, I started looking at marine grade plywood which I discovered is really just plywood with a waterproof glue. It's also a little heavier than standard plywood. Regular 1/4", 4' x 8' plywood comes in at 22lbs (on average) and marine would be 27lbs, it's also about around $2 sq/ft, give or...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

I made this thread for ideas, not for gatekeeping. I am not questioning anyone's credentials or dismissing someone out of turn. I'm sorry I don't know who you are or your credentials. I'm not here to make something for the public or an awards show, this is my own private use and it's a...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

I looked at I beams, even small ones are too big. I'm already pushing 11'+ and I'm gonna be mounting things from the ceiling, I don't want to stoop when walking around. I'm making the crawl space as low as I can but need it to be high enough to have the fuel tank (it'll be a fuel cell) work...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

Well, to be honest, I only sparsely looked at other options. I'm happy to consider other options, really the reason why this thread exists. I want the roof to hold a fair bit of weight from below and not give when you walk on it and squares seemed like a good way to go. It's a rather small...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

Alright, picked up a Lincoln "Handy" welder, wire feeder. Right now, my thought is something along the lines of 7 gauge 2x2 for the roof/ceiling (87") and the same for the floor. The roof pieces will be spaced 24" (or 18"?) OC and rest on probably 18 gauge 2x2 for the side frame. On the...

I mean SMAW. My ~100 hours was at the local tech school, night classes.

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

I have about 10 hours with wire feed, and about 100 hours with stick. I have an Amico Tig-225 which I bought to stick weld small stuff, weighs about 25 lbs, very portable, and a Miller Dialarc which weighs 505 lbs and is not very portable. I don't have a good place for the dialarc so it's not...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

For half the weight, 3x the price and 3x the deflection I could go with aluminum. So, I would probably save around 500 lbs. Steel tubing will cost around $2k. I am figuring in a max weight of 3500 lbs in the bed, I don't think I'll need that 500lbs as much as I need that $4k. I'll almost...

Steel vs Aluminum tubing (Camper frame)

So, I'm about a third the way through my 30 point "checklist of fun" and I'm thinking about item 20, the camper. Is there anyone here that knows more than the average person about structural tubing, aluminum vs steel vs ?? that I can pick their brain with a few questions? I'm also wondering if...
