Aluminum works great as long as the antenna base gets a good electrical connection to it. A mag mount won't work very well, so it's time to bring out the drill.
X2 on the mic. I forgot about the Astatic on my 2900. It does work well cancelling out the noise booming around inside the cab. I've been told my TX is clear as a bell going close to top speed in a noisy truck with the windows down. (Headphones help on copying the RX.)

2. Go to the CB shop and see what they have in stock. Talk to the people there... Go cheap, or go big. It's your ride. Radio shack still has CB stuff, too, but I wouldn't count on more than a checkout clerk to help you.

For the budget-minded folks... Don't forget to poke around yard sales and flea markets. Most of my CB radios were $5 and under, and almost all of them work just fine. The others that aren't an easy fix go into the parts pile.
