Not a bad price for a new, stock item axle. The fact that it is the correct length for the front flange to work also means it would work with a locking hub.

You are right, I would have some extra room there. I could put a split collar on the axle shaft to pull it slightly out of the side gear as well, that way I could split the differance between the 2 sets of splines.
Hmmmm..... More things to try!
Kenny, thanks! let me know when it...
Yeah, a grand is a lot. But, if the truck is what you enjoy driving, then do it! I tell you what: anyone has a deuce they want to give away, I'll take it and get the hubs! It would still make sense to use the axle and the desplined flange in the rear. Quicker and easier than pulling an axle...
Damn! That is not a bad price! I was looking at a $250 cutter and a $60 blank. Not to mention about 4 hrs on the old mill. I don't really see how I could beat that price by much, and I couldn't beat the turn around time at all.
You would only need 1 axle, there is really no need to unlock both...
I can remember some old Warn hubs that had been drilled for grease fittings. This was on some old CJ's that saw a good bit of salt water use where I grew up in NW Fla. Most of the old beach jeeps did not have brakes, long since rusted away. The owners would shoot a good slug of grease in the...
Thanks for the input guys! The only reason we were worried about tapping a bushing into the spindle is that the inner section is not machined. Kenny was concerned that it might not be true with the OD of the spindle.
Instead of heading for the bottle jack, maybe you could mount an air over...
Just an added note:
A machine/fab shop that I do about 1/4 million a year business with (through my job) has had some axle experience over the years. He used to make dragster axles from 4140. He told me he was always a little nervous about his axles breaking under the HP loads, since he had no...
When y'all pull one rear axle does everything "unwind"? If the bolts come out and the axle stays in one place, there should be little problem with a hub. If it turns a good bit, or if the last bolt out is really in a bind, then there could be some problems.
I do not yet own a deuce, so I can't...
I got a price on 4140 today. If I buy 1 5/8" (1.625) it will run $60 per axle blank. If I get 1.75", it is about $50 per blank. The 1 5/8" must not be as commonly used. As far as re-splining an existing axle, most of the ones I have worked on over the years have been flame hardened on the...

When I get everything ready, I will let you know. I will probably try to get you and Kenny up at the same time and fit out both trucks. If you have some extra front drive flanges, send them down and I'll get them turned out for you. I can bore them on the lathe in about 1/2 hr.

An extra long side axle would be perfect to work with! I normally set up a shaft in the lathe, indicate true, then turn a small section for my steady rest. Set up the rest, then you can pull the live center away and part the end off the shaft. You can then drill the center hole with a...

I am going to get a front flange ordered from Saturn this week. Kenny has already given me the measurements for the axle length. I am going to get on some of the websites for the mudder crowds and see if I can scare up a damaged front axle end with intact splines. Kenny wants to be a...
Last time I went to Evansville Indiana, it took 6 hrs at 75-80 mph. A little far to drive a deuce! However, if you are in the neighborhood, and don't mind leaving it for a couple of weeks (My job at Honda keeps me busy 10 hrs+ a day) I will be glad to use your deuce as a lab rat!
Seriously, an...
If anyone can loan me an axle, preferably one they are not planning on using for a while, I will pay shipping both ways. I need one to dial in my mill and dividing head.

The measurements are just fine. You said the rear axle was dished out 1.875", was that to the outside end of the axle? If it is to the inside, there might be enough meat in the flange to do the trick. I could chuck an axle up in the lathe and turn the flange off to the required diameter...
We need to find an axle with the same spline dimensions as a deuce. The length needs to be about 3" longer, as best I can tell from the pics of a front hub installation. If they can be gotten cheaply (the cheaper the better), they would be a great place to start on a rear axle conversion. Just...
I would like to request that the moderators re-name this topic "Rear axle locking hub conversions", or something similar. We have moved from one subject to another, and the second topic seems to have a lot of interest.
I am seriously considering building these axles in my basement shop. I will...
I can get 4140 in 20' lengths. I have a friend who has a machine shop/fab shop. he is making pump shafts out of 1.75" O.D. 4140 steel, 20' long pieces. I can get just about any type steel, any size, any length. Price is the only concern. Axles are normally machined from forgings, it would be...
