Why are military generators so big?

I was wondering about that also. Was it so you didn't have to start up the generator to move it ?

Why are military generators so big?

First off I own 7 MEP generators and 4 deuces. Second I try and make useful comments to help. I don't set back and "rag" on someone elses piece of equipment. If they have a problem that I can help with I usually try too. I don't go and say things like "that is a piece of crap and you should buy...

Why are military generators so big?

When I was first made "Sargent" in the Marines I was assigned to "vehicle parts procurement" for a few months. I learned a whole lot of stuff that went on that quite frankly pissed me off ! We hid parts from the inspectors and over-inflated our budgets by over 40% ! When the company commander...

Why are military generators so big?

I think you might have hit the nail on the head. I've been reading that the military has chosen to start meeting federal civilian standards on almost all their equipment and supplies. They even have gone with "eco" friendly oils.

Why are military generators so big?

I asked you if you owned any MEP generators just to verify what I already guessed. You never make any helpful comments, only negative or rude statements about others generators. Your also wrong about how the military disposes of it's equipment. A brand new generator ( or any piece of equipment)...

Why are military generators so big?

Your point was well said. What I was referring too was 74M35A2's comment about not needing to back up a statement someone has made. If anyone makes a "statement" around here they better be able to back it up. This is not a site for BS comments but actual, tangible facts or real life experiences...

Why are military generators so big?

The nearest power was over a mile away and the power company wanted over $20,000.00 to bring in the power lines. As far as DieselAdict proving anything, if he brings up a subject then he should support it, as should you.

Why are military generators so big?

I lived off the grid for 7 years. The typical civilian generator would last me one year. That's including the Honda's. I had to run the generator at least 10 hours a day for the refrigerator and freezer to work properly. What usually happened was it got run 16 hours a day as my wife did not like...

Why are military generators so big?

If you didn't have the 12 leads you wouldn't have single and 3 phase capability. No single phase generator use's 12 leads. Yes the reconnection switch box adds weight but it doesn't explain the extra size of the generator head.

Why are military generators so big?

You hit the nail on the head ! It is because it can do both 1 Phase and 3 Phase power. There are indeed two complete and separate sets of windings on this generator head. Also the engines are made out of cast iron, not aluminum. Iron is heavy ! but they last longer then aluminum .
