MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I believe your correct. My MEP-003A has been working fine now for almost 8 years.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Here's another picture showing the area that contact was made. It is a poor design, as the cable has to pass the dog-leg of a shelf to reach the upper terminals. In my other units the cable was longer and they put a half circle in the cable to avoid this area. In this unit all the wires and...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I started the modification on my other MEP-002A today. As I was tearing out all the junk from the reconnection box I came across the real problem that caused my generator to fail last year. I had used this generator for several years with no problems. It just failed during a major outage. I...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

The biggest changes are done to the reconnection box. So since I will be converting my MEP-003A next I'll start taking pictures and posting comments along the way.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I suppose I could try and make a write up on what I did. It is a royal pain though since I don't have any fancy programs to help out with. Oh by the way Ray. I came down with food poisoning last night and have been dealing with it even as I write this so I was not able to get to the post office...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Well after installing a new A1 (starter relay , also called K1 ) I found I still had the circuit breaker kicking off. So after days of messing with this unit I finally found the culprit. I need a 55 OHM resistor inline with wire "P60A16" to my positive field wire. This way I keep the self...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

CrzyDave you never showed us your running generator ! I would like to see how you did yours.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Well I found the problem to the breaker tripping. On A1 the number 1 wire nut is totally stripped out. It was just dangling there barely making contact. Problem is now I need a new A1 module as the temperature got so high it melted the stand-off studs holding the diodes. Hey Ray do you have a...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Your talking about the frequency transducer right ?

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Thanks Chainbreaker. I was looking for it's physical location. I didn't realize it was part of the starter lockout assembly.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

More pictures. In picture two you see the Diode pack (upper right hand corner) that "flashes" the generator. The only wire that had to be reinstalled was here. Wire number "P60A16" must be installed to "A1 7" on the module. Then the wire you designate as the positive field must be attached to...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Got pictures of the running rig. I see I have to balance the load better . I'm still having trouble with the DC circuit breaker kicking off. Somewhere somehow I left off a wire that is really needed. The second picture shows all the stuff I took out. I removed them and all the wires associated...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Well I got my modified system up and running. I still need to adjust the regulator and figure out why my DC circuit breaker keeps kicking out. I jumped the breaker to get it started. I know that is a No ! No ! but I wanted to see if the regulator would regulate ! I'll get my notes and pictures...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

That is what I have found when my generators went wonky ! I would get 150 volts at each leg, total of 300Volts . The lights where really bright though !

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

There is no reason NOT to use the systems diode. I was removing and rewiring wires today in the control box and the flash circuit is easy to keep. In fact after you remove one unneeded wire from "TB5" to the diode you just reinstall the flash circuit wire. Almost as if it was designed this way...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

This is where I'm at today. I've finished the distribution box and have started removing wires in the control box. The small coils on L1 and L3 are for my Amp gauges I bought from "Jimc" .

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I've been following Craigs plan for a while now. I was actually in the process of converting my first MEP-002A when my second MEP-002A took a dump. At first I hoped it was just the voltage regulator so I bought a new one from Triple Jim. But alas it is the stupid CVT-1 again ! That makes 3 for...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I'm having the same problem too Dave. I already bought a SX460 AVR . Today I'm finishing up gutting the control boxes. This is the third CVT-1 that has taken a dump on me and I'm done with it.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

My MEP-002A took a dump on me last week also. Our power went out so of course I started up the MEP -002a. I had to go to the store so I left my wife (who was sleeping) and my son to watch the house. When I got back the generator was still running but my son came out and said the power was off...
