You need to use the "plate" that has two threaded holes for the reservoirs. It is used instead of the plastic housing. The standard "plastic" housing will not work.

Take a sample of the brake fluid and try and add a drop of water to it. If it's DOT 5 then it will appear to puddle on top of the fluid. It will not mix. In DOT 3 the water will mix in.
