    the fact the front windows open are a plus while running in ice storms the guy riding shot gun can open his window and scrape yours and knock ice build up off the wiper blades for you while driving down the road. however sitting un attended in a blizzard will shure enough fill the cab with snow

    you make a good point about cab movement I may have to cut out flex joints and splice in arctic grade wires before winter hits. it sounds redneck but I have done this quite successfully in automotive doorjambs up here to fix re occurring broken wires from the cold.

    I agree the electrical system is far more complex than the old m44 variants but I wouldn't say they are any more unreliable just keep good batterys with clean connections and don't put the cab under water you should be fine

    the only problem that one needs to head off is air in the fuel system it will cause premature failure of the fuel pump and unit injectors. this is where the special tools come in. other wise the military models seem to have a reoccurring broken air compressor supports that will break the front...

    I work on all brands and the local mechanic should have the tools to work on them or he isn't a mechanic. I cant say any one engine is better than another the 3116 is a pretty good engine and will do a hundred k between overhead adjustments. maintained the throw away part is a non issue you put...

    as a retired army mechanic I have driven and worked on both the 5 ton is crude simple and reliable. I chose the lmtv because it drives nicer and it has 1 less axle to maintain, I didn't need a second axle, and the cab seals up staying dry and snow free. the choice is yours and what suits you...
