you don't have to you just hook in series, the 12 volt lead goes to the 12 v positive post, and 24 volt to the to the second battery. it really simplifies wiring. The only problem I have right now is clearance in the cover, I think I can resolved, once I get the wires warmed up and laid down...

I just replaced mine with 2 8-d batterys the tray does have to be modified and the 8-ds are a little wider. My cover wont fit down over they battery's right, I think a little heat in the box and I can get the wires to lay right, but at - 25 have fun trying to get those wires to flex. New...
