    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

I fab the 5 1/2" round tube housings and make the tube fork ends. I make the axles shafts from alloy 4340. 225,000 tensile strength per square inch.. The customer wanted 3.90 gear ratio final drive, all axles are driven with lockers in both rears.

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

I have built axles with welded planets but were for a truck that weighted 1/2 what a M1078 does and much smaller tires. I do not have pic's of the welded planets for the rears. Pic's are for basic info., do not ask me to build these axles, because a lost my rear end making them.

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

All of my meritor axle builds for off road use I have removed the CTIS seals to lube both wheel bearings with the gear oil. The seal will keep the oil in the hub, but the opening in the spindle for the air supply must be plugged at the spindle flange, or oil will come out.

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

The 2 seals for the CTIS are rated at 175 PSI. The inside would have the vent but that is inner side, that oil would run out of the bottom of the steering kunckle.

Not sure how the oil in the outside part of the hub i getting past 2 high pressure air seals into the inner part and get by of a premium hub seal. Oil can go down the spindle bore and get by the one seal on the stub axle hub.

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

Here is the drawing i whipped up. I have many leftover drive caps so i put some of them in the saw and faced them off in the lathe. I use these now to clamp down the cross pin. Place one pinion gear at 6:00 o'clock to check your clearance. The other 3 are have Gravity on them and will give you a...

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

I have so of these Meritor RF-12 ( M1078A1 and 2 on up) kits. These have 100% all of the planetary parts with end cap. This can really help some one that opens their hub up to find chewed up parts.

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

The shims come in .015, .020, but most of them are .025. Working with new fronts makes it easy. The other side of the planetary is all ready done. As for the 2.1705 + -, i will thrust my clearance way of setup over the engineered way. Is everyone that has a M1078 and up going to out to find one...

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

I have torn down quite a few of these brand new LMTV front axles to find that there really is not much of any torque on the spindle nut against the wheel bearings. This is the start of where the spindle nut is set to do the rest of your setup.

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

Working with the FMTV hub it is very important to setup up the clearance of these gears after removing the hub and reinstall. When the bearings are replaced of cleaned and repacked you need to check the gear clearance. I use a tool to check the clearance of these gears, this clamps it down so...
