Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

JD 4010 w/ a #58 loader. Thanks for the tip on the bore scope. I'm about to the point where I'm ready to hook on to it and give it a few tugs to see if it will break loose. Nothing violent, just an easy pull or two.

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

No progress to report on the M220 or Boyce trucks, I've been spending what time I have working on the M35A2 brakes. But I was driving the tractor the other day as we laid some pipe down in one of the fields when I took this picture of M220 #2 (engine still won't turn). Thought I'd pass it on.

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Yes they will, even another year or two is okay. We'll keep plugging away at it.

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Rain! The rain has arrived and we're grateful for it, even though it cut short my work on the trucks today and it may be too late for some of the dry farm crops. I'm getting these trucks ready to park for the winter. My "truck time" is just about done and it looks like I won't be doing any...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Sounds like some nasty weather, hope you all stay safe up there! 5" of rain? Yeah, you can send some of that down, but, can you send it in 1/2" increments, say, once a day for the next week or so? Keep the hail! You and the others on Steel Soldiers have been a great help. Good bunch of...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Update Haven't done much on the M220's or Boyce trucks recently. But I've been busy on the M35A2 and finally drove it out of it's 25+ year resting spot yesterday. You can see the story, with video, in the Deuce forum "Bringing an M35A2 out of the trees . . ." Not much $$ in the farm budget...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Here's a tip I got the other day on freeing a rusted engine. The guy who told me about it owns over 75 (yup, 75+) old John Deere tractors and has rebuilt many of them. He knows his stuff and I trust his word on all such things. He said when he starts to work on an engine that won't turn he...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Because this is a low-buck operation, I topped up the cooling systems on M220#1 and Boyce #1 with straight water. Both had good antifreeze in them when I started or they wouldn't have survived all the Idaho winters they lived through. Definitely have to remember to drain them and refill with...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

I've been checking it at the crank pulley, hadn't thought about trying it at the flywheel, I'll give that a try when I check it next week.

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Thanks for those tips. I'll check the valve lash and use the air. All plugs were out and gas pedal to floor when I checked the compression.

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Gasket set: I'll hunt one down Beverages: strictly water and diet coke during the day, an occasional cold beer after work is always good  Band-aids: my hands cut and bleed easily so I wear gloves as often as I can, I've got band-aids stashed in my pockets, tool box, glove box, etc...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Yes. I hear you! I have to stop sometimes and sort them out myself. Here's a quick rundown on what I'm working on and what I call it: M220#1 - original 6 cylinder, 5 speed manual trans, engine is free but compression is almost non-existent, needs valve job, clutch master cylinder locked up...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Yeah, I wish I'd found the same results you did. I probably should have checked compression sooner, but I was so confident it was going to start up with just some ignition work that I blew right by that one. Oh well . . . Good photo, sitting in the engine compartment! I'm accustomed to...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Compression: not good Checked the compression in M220 #1 today, 0 - 60 pounds dry, no significant improvement wet. :( Checked with a local machine shop, gave me a range of $200 - $400 to do a valve job. Need to check with son-in-law to see how he wants to proceed. Jack

Still using a squirt bottle with an occasional shot of starting fluid.

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Update First, a good Independence Day to all! The little town (pop. less than 1,000) where we're staying does a great job of celebrating this day: pancake breakfast, parade on Main Street, town fair in the park, cookouts and fireworks. M220#1: still no go. I haven't started using my...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Well, no progress to report on M220 #1, still tinkering with the ignition and wondering if there's a blockage in the carb. Also, spending a lot of time helping out on the farm. But the A1 is back on the road again. Both advance springs in the dist were gone, local mechanic replaced them with...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Yeah, roger that! Fire scares the heck out of me. Always very careful and the hose is hanging off the side of the truck.[thumbzup]

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Jeep? Our A1 quit running a couple of weeks ago, we got it up on the trailer and it's been there ever since. I've been using my time to work on the trucks. But I'm missing the Jeep so I'm taking tomorrow morning off from the trucks to see if I can get it running. Found a broken advance...

Trying to get two m220's running after a long rest

Got a few pops, but not running yet Only had a little "truck time" today. M220 #1 gave a few weak pops this morning, but refused to start. 2 new batteries. Has spark, but doesn't look too strong. Going to clean up the points and pull the plugs out of the M38A1 to give them a try. Also, the...
