    Be sure to ground the UHF coaxial connector sleeve after you screw it on tight at the base of the antenna. That creates the ground reference for the base fed 1/4 wave ground plane.

    Actually, the MS type sections are hard steel tubing with light copper coating. If you crush them they split so you can't cut them with pliers or diagonal cutters. Not even a tubing cutter works. Best way to cut them is a grinding disk, or score them around the outside with a file then break...
