    Soft top from scratch

Thanks. It happened about the time I stopped in this thread, so has had some recovery. I refuse not to use it. Arthritis is bad. I did get the A3 on the axle as the above photo shows.

    Soft top from scratch

The top project stalled. While plating the frame of my M35A3 project with a 10' long 11"x3"x1/4", the brace I had holding the sheet near in place shifted and the sheet tried to remove my right thumb, up against the rear tire. It crushed as I ripped out.... but saved the thumb. The A3 project...

    Soft top from scratch

Thanks BDGR. Originally that was very much like what I wanted. I will think about it as it will likely stick to the BN...but I'm not sure it would stick to the outside with the waterproofing over the BN. It would probably go on before waterproofing if at all Where would it run to, off the...

    Soft top from scratch

Plan is to put a stainless steel rod in the front to be able to pull against. i don't have that yet to head off to the tarp sewing shop yet, but I have the canvas and BN. The amount of wrap will be long enough to come back around on it'self about 6", making the front edge around the duckbill...

    Soft top from scratch

Here is a sample of the steel duckbill that will stick out in front and I believe on top of the door window. Strategic holes give places to zip tie it and pull it tight. Ill have a cable or rod put in the front and side.

    Soft top from scratch

Today samples of canvas came and so did the ballistic nylon. I was not impressed with the canvas 10oz samples but it gave me some materials to plan the front folds with the steel overhang and screw locations. Enough for 2 layers of 12 oz cotton canvas is on it's way, thus I will have 2 inner...

    Soft top from scratch

I hope the BN has similar property to the nylon strap. The nylon strap sample I painted likes the Rustoleum camo rattle can paint and does not try to make a hard surface or be brittle. I think it will make a very good UV protectant too. Ordered enough canvas for 2 layers of the black 12 oz (4...

    Soft top from scratch

The skills needed for these various covers are the same so a bit OT will benefit us all, Jbulach. I ordered enough of the ballistic nylon (BN) that is light weight, but very strong, almost opposite to the idea that heavy canvas would be stronger, better insulating to sound and temp. For...

    Soft top from scratch

I used the Rustoleum flat (camo) oil based rattle-can on a seat and waterproofed over that. Without the waterproofing, it was like sandpaper....totally non skid. It looked and held up well, so I'm going to take my chances with the top. The dark forest is about a match for the 383 Green and...

    Soft top from scratch

Thanks BDGR, the cost of the ballistic black nylon in 1680D for the top layer was $59. I couldn't pass it up. I can easily make a 9x9 blank and have a 5" seam lap. Plans on this project have changed to using ballistic nylon on the outer layer and a canvas inner layer with mat foam in...

    Soft top from scratch

I don't mind heavy....with the cotton canvas anyway. In fact for sound and heat, it seems desired to me over lighter weight material. I ordered samples of the canvas in untreated but died dark olive for the outside in #10 (15 oz) and #8 (18oz) canvas, then ordered sample of a cheaper black...

    Soft top from scratch

Bulldogger is in on the boot Frank, I'm just an interested bystander. He probably has more capability than I do with the Cordura or ballistic nylon. I have a big learning curve to overcome on the top with regular canvas. Untreated canvas is now my material of choice. I'm finding that I can...

    Soft top from scratch

I'm unlikely to use the Cordura and ballistic nylon myself. I can see that it may be preferred material for many uses on our MVs. Are they materials that you have used Bulldogger? Do they work with adhesives? Could you make the axle boot to glue (a seam) on? Velcro? Back to the soft...

    Soft top from scratch

I missed the sale at the canvas store for 1.99/yard. Now it's 4.99 for the 12oz duck. I'm looking for alternatives but my guess is, the Cordura is really expensive. I'll look into it. I'm into cheap (but heavy). I looked for the 21oz waterproof and found that it's really 15 oz when it is...

    Soft top from scratch

Cost for materials on one (should be enough for two) of about $100, I thought I would try it. I've located some marine duck deep forest green 12 oz for about $3 a yard. I'll make an inner layer and then an outer with some closed cell foam in between. Most sewing will be done by hand using...

    Soft top from scratch

Has anyone made their soft top? I need one on the deuce and M929. I'm looking at duck canvas in 12oz and thinking of using black inside and OD outside with closed cell foam to insulate and cut noise. Joints/seams will be glued and have large overlaps. I may have a center seam done by the...
