    Very nice HMMWV. Sounds like you have a plan. If it's the fourth and reverse clutch, try not to use reverse any more than you have to if you plan to re-use it.

    That "glistening with metal particles" is the clutch friction material. If you keep going with slipping clutch, eventually it will burn up the aluminum piston. Does the "smattering of tiny metal fragments" appear to be aluminum? Stop now if it's aluminum. New fluid does not solve the problem...

    I'll put my wager on clutch pack piston seal giving up. The more you try, especially if you give it RPM, the more damage it will do to the clutches and particularly the aluminum piston. Check for grit in the pan oil from the decaying frictions and (hope not) aluminum balls from the melting...
