He shouldn't. Not saying he won't but it's a myth synthetics cause leaks versus modern conventionals. My concern is buying 7 gallons of Rotella t6. Man that ain't cheap. But if it helps him sleep better by all means.

    M35a2 oils

Any modern oil with a good detergent package will loosen sludge. Though usually synthetic oils do usually have a good detergent package. But even Rotella 15w 40, delo, or whatever high quality Dino oil will have a stout detergent package. Cheaper oils you would have to see the breakdown of...

    M35a2 oils

Yes. But I can just about promise the oil won't be clear. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the oil though. With a diesel you can't let black engine oil scare you. It's just going to happen.

I have always suggested gl-5 (80-90) in the axles. They need the high pressure additives. The transmission and transfer case don't

Man I'm with you. If your not confused enough already my f350 with the zf-650 takes atf. As does many other heavy duty gear boxes. If you don't think about it then it makes sense lol.

I'm not an ase certified master mechanic but I did stay at a holiday Inn express once.

    M35a2 oils

I'm not going to entertain another senseless argument over the exact labeling of oil products when over and over lube manufacturers state that non detergent engine oil is interchangeable with gl-1 gear lube. Especially when the msds is almost exactly the same if not exactly the same depending...

    M35a2 oils

Actually he's more correct than you realize. As I have stated over and over non detergent engine oil and gl-1 gear lube are just about identical. Hence why the guy who invented over dive for the deuce suggests it.

I feel like there is more going on with your transmission than what oil you used. 30 wt motor oil is almost exactly the same as gl-1 gear oil that these transmissions used for 50 or more years.

    M35a2 oils

Well it would depend on how and when you checked it. But in this case you would be correct that the oil system does drain down. Now if he runs the truck and it gets even higher than before that would indicate a problem. If it consistently rises to the same spot then no.

Not always true. It can also be a sign of fuel or coolant intrusion.

    M35a2 oils

All modern high quality oils have a potent detergent package that is intended to break down sludge. Your not going to cause a leak by switching from standard Rotella to Rotella t6 synthetic. Just an example. If something was leaking oil then chances are it was going to do so regardless of the...

Just a warning to everyone wanting all of these super slick oils....your transmission may scratch worse when you shift. The syncros need an oil that has a little resistance to it to slow the gears down so they mesh properly.

    M35a2 oils

40w non detergent oil is basically the same thing as gl-1 gear oil. They are right at about the same viscosity and they both are base stock oil. The lube order changed on the exact same transmission. If gl-1 worked for 40 years and suddenly the army changes the lube order.....well so what...

    M35a2 oils

Your synchros may not like that synthetic oil. No harm in trying it but it may not shift very good. Sometimes modern super slick oils aren't what these old transmissions like.

    M35a2 oils

This is a bit off topic...but not much. Do your manuals mention anything about using atf in a stick shift? I ask because that's exactly what a zf-650 specs. Among numerous other manual gear boxes and 4wd and awd transfer cases. Point being is each transmission is speced for a specific oil...

I wouldn't worry too much about brand. I run travelers 80w-90 from tsc in all of my equipment. No problems at all. I run it in my deuce axles also. Good stuff. Just find a gl-5 rated gear oil and get it done.

    M35a2 oils

I NEVER use lucas in my engine. But I do add a small amount to the tranny and transfer case. None in the axles either. Increasing the viscosity in engine oil is usually a bad thing. Motor oils are designed to thin to a certain viscosity at operating temperature. As the oil ages the...
