Surplus Fluke 27/FM Multimeters

I did a search to see if this was already covered but
nothing showed up.

Surplus Fluke multimeters built for the military are on fleabay.

Fluke 27/FM (fluke military)
excellent meters for good prices

OD green cases and all. Some yellow.
Most auctions have all accessories and manuals included

I just picked up two.

Since these are so valuable in troubleshooting
CUCV problems I thought I would pass along the
info

Usually they say not to post links or discuss active auctions. There's been turmoil in the past. Though I can't imagine a multimeter would cause much drama.

The two I just bought were listed as "used" but looked brand new.
All probes and testers and paperwork included. Plastic still covering the display.

Ill take the heat if this helps someone get a really nice meter.

20+ years old but will still hold its own with the new 28ll model
Both are NOS and complete sets
Listing said used. They weren't.
One even had the original invoice sheet
US Govt paid $572.47 each. In 1989.

Another good multimeter is the fluke 16 or 116. They are also true RMS, are not mega bucks and are nearly idiot proof. I like them because they can measure temperature (which is handy) and capacitance. The only feature they don't have is ac or dc current. Probably the best feature is that they are "idiot proof" since they do not have a separate input for current you can never leave you leads on the current input then apply your test probes to an energized circuit possibly damaging whatever you are testing, blowing an expensive fuse in the meter and making a flash in your face. Another good investment is an ac/dc clamp on ampmeter. Personally I like the old ones that put out 1mv/amp that you use with your multimeter. It allows for remote reading which can be important.

Luckily I stumbled upon these when searching for info on another Fluke model.

These do everything I want and need for hundreds less.

Was going to purchase the Fluke 28ll and saw a link to these.

Now I will take the $$$ I saved for more CUCV spare parts !!

How would these compare to my trusty Fluke 77? Am I good with what I have, or is there a good reason to buy one of these in my case?

Your 77 is a good meter, it just isn't true RMS. It will be accurate on DC, and sinusoidal AC, but square wave and rectified DC will cause it to not be accurate... like up to 40% off. Personally if I owned a 77, not having true RMS would not be a deal breaker for me.

Your Fluke is just fine.
I did not have a meter at all and needed one.

This thread was more for the folks who had a Harbor Freight, cheapo
meter and wanted to upgrade to a high quality meter.

I've been asked via PM's who I bought these from on *bay

It was an individual who only had the two. It was not a store that has tons of stuff listed.
The person does not and will not get anymore of the meters.

I've owned two of these from ebay- loved the first ($40) so much I gave it to a good friend and got myself a basically unused one ($50). Things to watch for: leads replaced with lower quality ones, and blown fuses, which aren't super cheap. Best prices I've found for replacements are below:

I also bought from individual sellers on ebay- if you're patient, you can get a good unit for short money, often times with the high voltage probe and a good lead kit.

I was lucky and both were NOS while listing said used.
All leads and probes and Hz? testers included

Did the fuze test according to manual and all checked out good!

Both had the military manuals
Easier to read and understand
For me at least

Going to buy two more for gifts for friends.

Amazon has the best fuze prices I've found.
