I've seen feedback from people that traded out their PTO for a Warn 8274 (the only electric winch they thought was worth trading for) and now they wish they had stuck with their old PTO. They say that thing was unbreakable.

It's a 1955. When I got it, it was blue and had civilian air patrol logo on it (from Spokane, WA). Under was the OD so I put it back. I need to stencil it and go back to NDTs (but the radials ride so much better)... someday. The hardtop is original and I salvaged the original plywood doors. It's great for three seasons but summers are tough. It's a blasted oven.

I installed the military in cab heater-you should try that, thing puts out some serious heat! You can stick with the soft top and still be warm in the winter.

Winch on M38A1

Hey guys,

I have read for years about the various problems mounting winches on Jeeps. Having to bend the exhaust pipe to make the PTO fit, etc.

It seems to me the problem would be greatly simplified if Warn or Ramsey made a 24V electric winch. Could just buy the winch with no mounting hardward and very easily fabricate a bracket to hold it.

If they don't make a 24V which incidentally I have never seen or heard of, could a motor winding shop rewire the 12V winch and change it to 24V? Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on this, would appreciate hearing from you. I have a 12V winch on my Chevy pickup with a hard wire remote control. Now, Warn is selling winches with wireless remote controls. How cool is that?

Wouldn't it be great to hook up the winch and stand off to the side and operate it with a wireless remote control. Unless of course you needed to be in the Jeep to help the winch along with the Jeep in drive position.

I'm surprised the military hasn't gone to electric winches. They seem so much more simple. Of course any electric winch pulls a lot of amperage and it is advisable to be in the Jeep and rev the motor up to a fast idle to help save the battery.

Just for what it's worth on electric winches, take an 8,ooo pound winch and run out the cable to an anchor, attach a snatch block to the anchor and return the cable back to the front of the Jeep. In so doing, you double the pull to 16,000 pounds of pull and you reduce the consumed amperage BY HALF! Essentially works on the same principle as a block and tackle. The more pulleys you wind on a block and tackle, the easier it is to lift whatever. On the double hookup on a vehicle, try to keep the cable perpendicular to the front of the vehicle. Pulling at an angle with 16,ooo pounds of pull can in some cases BEND YOUR VEHICLE FRAME. Incidentally, this double hookup will double the pulling power of your PTO winch also.

You can buy winches that are specifically 24 volt, they are just expensive. In researching different winches I came across several that were advertised as 12 volt but if you read the manual they can be wired for 24 volts (I think Warn specifically had several like this). You can easily compare products and read their manuals on sites like Northern Tool and Equipment; I think that is where I found most of my information.

I have a 24V motor and 24V solenoids (4 required) for the Warm winch I took off. The solenoids are not so expensive and I took a donor 12v motor and changed the guts out to 24V. The guts (armature, fields) were standard stuff.

That being said, I don't think electric winches would ever be suitable (pass muster) for the defined mission of an MV without a lot of electronics to go along with it (limit switches, etc.). Reliability has to be paramount to any accessory like a winch and I think hydraulics beat electric. Plus, electric are either off or on, no feathering capabilities. I think thats a huge minus.

I'm not convinced a remote control is safe. I'll take safe over cool any day -- to me that's Soldier A and Soldier B to do a proper winching job.

good thread. I'm looking to put a 24v electric winch on my M38A1...mainly due to the price of a pto setup.

If the OP is still around, did you use a normal winch plate for a CJ5 or some special version which fits our rigs?

Geeze, that was back in the late 90s so I cannot recall. I suspect it was for a CJ5 -- I do remember purchasing the mount from Warn. I wonder if they make it anymore given that winch is obsolete? My electric one with the mount is still sitting in the shop -- I'll bet I put less than 5 hours on it during the 15 years it was mounted...

thanks Al. The winch you had originally looks like an 8274 from the pictures.
The 8274 is still being sold by Warn (I feel it is one of the best winches ever made). It is the first choice for a winch on my M38A1 but I am still working out the 12v/24v issue (also they are pretty dang expensive)
