I recently bought a 923a2 (2010 rebuild) that I use for hauling my equipment. Just yesterday driving home from a job, the ABS light came on and all gauges within normal specs. About 20 minutes later I noticed that the gauges looked a little smokey and the volt gauge was in the red. So pulled over and disconnected the hot wire off the back of the alternator assuming the voltage regulator went out. When I did that the volts dropped back to between yellow and green on the gauge. I rehooked the hot wire back to the alternator just to see if it would spike back up, and it didn't (I also reved the motor to see if it would spike and it didn't) So I drove off with the alt hooked back up and the alt gauge read normal for about 5 minutes then it spiked into the red again. So I disconnected the hot wire again and finished driving home. I should also mention that this is a brand new Delco 21si ( I read several times that the stock alternators were problematic, so I changed it ahead of time) Im going to throw a voltmeter on it today and see what I get. I did a search on here and read about the ABS light issues and tried to go through the TM's and nothing seems related to my issue.
Has anyone seen a pattern like this before? If the gauges are still working do you think they will be ok or do they fry out quickly from a voltage spike? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
